HILLHEAD OF COVINGTON TOP AT £2850

Milkers average £2317

The August Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale attracted the best dairy cattle from across the North of England and Scotland with almost 250 cattle selling to a top of £2850 with 117 milking heifers averaging £2316; only 12 milking heifers selling below £2000. 

This famous monthly sale featured freshly calved cows and heifers, dry cows, in calf heifers, short bred heifers and bulling heifers with several breeds represented including Holstein, British Friesian, Ayrshire, Scandinavian Red, Jersey and Brown Swiss cattle all selling.  Demand for all categories of dairy cattle continues to rise on the back of recent milk prices rises with many dairies selling less milk than this time last year. 

Agri-King sponsored the sale with the top price going to the Baillie family from Hillhead of Covington Farm near Biggar selling for £2850.  She was, Covington Complex Bon, sired by Bomaz Complex with a PLI+£471 and bred from a high production dam that gave over 12000kgs. Another super uddered heifer from this home sold for £2750, this was for Covington Sublime Renata, a daughter of Denovo Sublime.  Eight other heifers from this consignment sold to average £2643.

The Wadsworth family from Big Balcraig Farm near Newton Stewart sold eight heifers to average £2400 topping at £2800 for a daughter of R2D2, she was giving 40kgs with a PLI+£418.

Jim and David Gray from Drumtall Farm near Glasgow sold Drumtall Flashback Amy for £2700 she was sired by Alta Flashback and bred from a Dewars dam.

Holstein cows topped at £2450 twice, the first from the Wadsworth family, Big Balcraig Farm near Newton Stewart, she was sired by Kendrix with a PLI+£350.  The second was consigned by Mark Walton from Bank View Farm near Kirby Stephen for Bankview Darwin Sizzle; she was producing 46kgs.

There was an impressive consignment of British Friesian cows from several breeders with the top price of £2050 going to Richard Bell from Nerewater Farm in Wigton for Nerewater Ruffle, a recently calved heifer from an VG87 pointed dam. 

Ayrshires topped at £2100 for a very milky cow in her fourth lactation consigned by Richard Baynes from the Marley Cote herd in Northumberland.   

Sanders Farms from Ballalough Farm on the Isle of Man sold 40 freshly calved cows and dry cows to average £1539.  They were mainly Scandinavian Reds or British Friesian cows bred from Holstein cows.  They topped at £1900 for a daughter of Hacker, this fifth lactation Scandinavian Red had recently calved in her second and was bred from a VG87 pointed dam. 

A quality group of in calf Holstein heifers were forward from several top farms with the top price selling for £1900 for a daughter of Applejax consigned by Clifford Thompson from Lowrigg Farm near Brampton.

Ballaseyr Stud from the Isle of Man sold 37 in calf and short bred heifers topping at £1650 for a Brown Swiss cross bred heifer due in November to the Wagyu sire.
