50^TH ANNIVERSARY PRIMESTOCK SALE

MONDAY 19th AUGUST  2024

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller than expected show of only 52 prime cattle steers and heifers forward at the Borderway weekly sale. Included in this week’s sale was the 50^th year of Borderway pre sale show which was kindly sponsored by Arco and Lloyd Motor vehicles and was ably judged by father and son duo Jimmy and Connor Mulholland of R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle many thanks go to them. The overall champion was awarded to Mark Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth with his 1st prize British Blue cross heifer. This heifer weighed 646kgs and sold to 345pph equating to £2228.7 and was purchased by Mulholland Butchers. The Reserve Overall Champion came from the 1^st prize Limousin Heifer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont this heifer weighed 777kgs and sold to 331ppk equating to the day’s top overall pounds per head of £2575.76 and was purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill & Brampton. Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm sold the next best priced heifer at £2285.28 this was a 736kg British Blue cross and won 3^rd prize in her class she sold to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Appleby made their way across to Borderway and received a healthy £2239.7 for a 701kg Limousin cross. Steers sold to a days top of £2352.52 for 824kgs from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Next best at £2319.68 went to the first prized Limousin cross from Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton and purchased by Robert Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold a 790kg Limousin cross to £2310.75 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and Charolais crosses to £2304.86 for 813kgs from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill to Mr Eric Hall. Top price per kilo of 329.5p went to the first prized Limousin cross steer from Messrs Graham, Miller Hill.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 82 prime bulls forward at Borderway Weekly Sale whereby all classes sold dearer on the week. Topping the trade overall was an 819kg Limousin from Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton selling to £2543 to Mr Alan Jarvis. Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor, Berwick sold 784kgs to £2473.52. 30 Limousin cross bulls forward averaged £2005.33. Simmentals from Messrs Paxton, South Milmain Farm, Stranraer sold to £2239.74 for 828kgs. Charolais to £2218.13 for 875kgs from Bowsden Moor Farmand Aberdeen Angus crosses to £1980.18 for 684kgs from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton, top overall pence per kilo of 321.5p went to Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton with a 626kg Limousin cross purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle sold 632kgs to 317.5p. Charolais crosses to 301.5p from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle for 631kgs to Bowland Foods, Preston. Dairy bred bulls seen the biggest lift on the day with bulls 10 – 15p dearer on the week, topping the section at £1603.56 was a 664kg Holstein/Friesian from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton. Messrs Salkeld, South View sold 641kgs to £1567.25 to Jewitt Meats. Top pence per kilo of 253.5p went to a 594kg Holstein/Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton to Bowland Foods.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE:  A nice entry of 250 cast cows and 10 cast bulls. Trade throughout was flying from the off with a very mixed quality on offer overall. The cast cows saw a day overall top of £2180.42 for the 1^st prize British Blue from Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head and purchased by Mr David Holmes. Next best at £2122.71 went to an 818kg Limousin from Messrs Nisbett, Sorn Mains, Ayrshire and Messrs Wilson, Law Farm, Penrith sold 821kgs to £2114.08 purchased by Michael Helliwell. David Allen, Ellerslea sold a 932kg Simmental cross to £1952.54 purchased by Scotbeef, Inverurie. Maxwell Farming, Druidhall, Thornhill sold a run of great Aberdeen Angus cows and topped at £1764 for 800kgs. Dairy bred cows to £1734.30 for an 820kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Harrison, Woodhouse, Penrith purchased by Jewitt Meats. Holstein/Friesians to £1680.91 from Messrs Lough, South Lough House, Newcastle. PRIME LAMBS : On Monday 19^th August 2024 Borderway Market began its 50^th Anniversary week in great style with the annual show and sale of prime and cast sheep. An amazing 150 vendors consigned sheep to the event with the pre-sale prime lamb show being expertly judges by Mr James Thompson on behalf of Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston. The pre sale show was heavily supported with great quality throughout the classes. The first prize pen of Beltex cross lambs from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston who have a long standing relationship with the market, this amazing pair later topped the sale at £560 each £11.67 per kilo to local butcher Mulholland, Great Orton. The reserve Championship was awarded to the 1^st prize pair of AOC lambs in the shape of Dutch Texels from another great Borderway supporter Messrs Wigham, Hargill House which sold at £300 or £6.52 per kilo to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston
