PRIME CATTLE: A great entry of 64 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly sale which today was held on a bank holiday Monday. Quality was poorer on the week but plenty of flesh and numbers on offer. Topping the sale overall was a 871kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Gribbon, Waterside, Dumfries selling to £2530.26 to Steven Wilson Butchers Shops, Corby Hill & Brampton. Next best at £2434.88 for a 755kg Limousin cross from Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, Dumfries to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blue crosses to £2271.60 for a 720kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle to A & D Meats this steer was also top price per kilo British Blue at 315.5p. top price per kilo was the aforementioned 755kg flew for Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae at 322.5p. Heifers sold to £2151.64 for a 659kg Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith selling to Steven Wilson Butchers Shop. Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown to £2100.45 for a 670kg Limousin cross purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Dairy bred British Blue crosses to £1875.72 for 696kgs from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton and on Aberdeen Angus out of the Holstein from Messrs Morris, Greengatehouse Farm, Ecclefechan to £1828.71 for 702kgs to Mr Eric Hall. Top pence per kilo overall was 335.5 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Storey, Woodhead Farm, Haltwhistle for 519kgs purchased by Frasers Butchers, Hanover Street, Stranraer.

PRIME BULLS: A superb show of 115 prime bulls forward on this bank holiday Monday seeing a great trade throughout, overall came from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Lanarkshire selling their 843kg Limousin to £2622.83 and Messrs Telfer, Tarnflatt, Whitehaven sold 936kgs to £2578.68 to A & D Meats. Aberdeen Angus crosses to £2196.32 for 891kgs from Messrs Wilson, Newbank, Moffat to Mr Eric Hall. British Blue crosses to £2148.75 for a 750 bull from Messrs Laird, Lochend, Fife the same home also sold top Blonde to £2109.86for 673kgs. Simmentals to £2090.81 for 838kgs from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton, Lockerbie. Top pence per kilo overall came out at 317.5p for a 680kg Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton and the same home also sold 763kgs to 315.5p. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A superb offering of 307 cast cows Borderways weekly sale. The quality was good overall but there were a large number of plain dairy parlour cows throughout. Highest priced cow goes to Mr Liam Batty, Flimby Hall, Maryport selling a 796kg Limousin to £2336.26 to Mr Owain Llyr. Messrs Illingworth, Howgillside, Lockerbie sold the next best at £2204.97 for 863kgs. British Blues to £2150.70 for a lean 804kg cow from Messrs Jewitt, Gracies Farm, Barnard Castle to Owain Llyr. Aberdeen Angus cows sold to £2030.77 for 938kgs from Messrs Wilson, Newbank, Moffat purchased by Mr CJ Anderson, Dumfries. Beef Shorthorns weighing 848kgs from Messrs Steen, Coxhill Farm, Moffat sold to £1980.08 also to CJ Anderson. Hereford cross cows o £1951.33 for an 877kg from Messrs Millar, Upper Balannan, Castle Douglas. Top price per kilo beef cow came from Liam Batty’s Limousin achieving 293.5ppk and British Blues to 267.5p for the aforementioned Messrs Jewitt, Gracies Farm. Dairy cows sold to a day’s top of £1732.64 for an 931kg Swedish Red and White from Messrs Swainson, Moor Park, Carlisle next best was a 769kg Friesian from Messrs Hewitson, Kingshills, Brampton selling to £1649.54 both were purchased by Mr CJ Anderson, Dumfries a top pence per kilo of 267.50 went to a 538kg Friesian from Messrs Hall, Whitlawside, Canonbie selling to Mr Eric Hall. Montbeliarde cows sold to 229.5ppk for 556kgs from Messrs Messenger, Howes, Penrith purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis and finally a 679kg MRI from Messrs Crozier, Cowlyers, Silloth sold to 224.5p to Mr CJ Anderson.

PRIME LAMBS : On Monday 26th August Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep, yet again the numbers poured to Borderway with a great entry of 4447 head of sheep, vendors were vindicated in their decision to choose Borderway with all classes of sheep selling at rates beyond trades quoted elsewhere. 1516 ewes sold to average £123.97 with 2931 lambs averaging 306ppkg or £136.87 with all weights, grades, types and breeds represented in these averages. Ewes were a great trade throughout with the £200 barrier broken time and time again for the right goods. The sale leader was a sensational texel ewe from Mark Phillips, Mains of Minnydow at £315 selling to Yorkshire Halal Meat Ltd, Ossett. Rams sold to £300 from Josh Merrall, The Green, Irthington and all types significantly dearer on the week. A massive show of lambs forward sold to great demand. Claremont Properties, Penrith sold a lovely run of lambs to top the sale at £218 and 532p selling to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston. Messrs Sim, Chapel House, Wigton lead the heavy lambs with two lots at £200 per head with Suffolks to £180 from Messrs Frizzell, Thorneylands, Longtown.
