PRIME CATTLE: A great entry of 63 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly sale whereby quality and ordinary were seen to sell at a fantastic trade with 28 selling over £2000 and 15 selling over £2200 to a days top of £2460.54 for an 847kg quality Limousin cross steer from Messrs McClelland, Knockshinnoch, Dumfries selling to Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith sold next best selling 750kgs to £2448.75 and Messrs McClelland sold another 834kg steer to £2397.75. Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton sold best British Blue cross to £2275.63 for 826kgs. A 783kg dairy bred Aberdeen Angus sold to £2086.70 from Messrs Woods, Townfoot, Carlisle and Galloways to £1849.16 for 647kgs from Messrs Wallace, Gapshields, Brampton. Top overall pence per kilo of the day went to Messrs Dickinson 750kg Limousin cross attaining 326.5 ppk. Next best were 716kg from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle at 317.5p purchased by A & D Meats.
Heifers peaked at £2134.53 for 666kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith selling to Steven Wilson, Butchers Shops, Corby Hill and Brampton. Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle sold next best at £2081.20 for 688kgs to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 325.5p was achieved twice and on both occasions by Messrs Hird, West End Farm, Cockermouth, the first heifer weighed 618kg and the second 491kg selling to A & D Meats. Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton sold a 522 kg Blonde cross heifer to 311.5p purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

A 934kg Aberdeen Angus sold to £2255.61 from Messrs Story, Hobbiestown, Longtown and a 35 month old British Blue from Messrs Henderson, Park House, Carlisle sold to £2223.26 for 884kgs. Top overall pence per kilo of 321.00 went to a 706kg Limousin from Messrs Craik, Bankswood, Dumfries with the same vendors selling next joint price of 313.5p for 728kgs along with Messrs Wight, Whitrigghill Farm, Melrose who sold 683kg. Simmentals weighing 736kgs sold to 295.5 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie. PRIME LAMBS : On Monday 2nd September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep, a large show of predominantly local sheep was forward with all classes sharper on the week leaving vendors delighted with the day’s trading.
2955 prime lambs represent another large lift on the year sold to average 311p per kilo, with buyers reporting prices to be £8 dearer on average than any outlets selling today, leaving Borderway standing well ahead again this week. Top per head was £215 or 478p paid for Beltex lambs from Messrs Mccrone, Pasture Wood , Ivegill which sold to Bowland Foods Ltd. Heavy lambs sold very well once more with Messrs Longlands, Tone Hall, Hexham selling Suffolk x Mule lambs to £194 to lead this section selling to Andrew Dawson. A vast array of breeds, types and finishes were forward this week in their droves and each and every pen had several suitors ringside ensuring a great trade for all vendors.
1247 Local ewes forward is a real barometer of where we have come on this front over the last year, all vendors again sold to a sharper trade with some buyers simply unable to operate at the rates of trade seen, leading the way at £315 was a pure texel ewe from Messrs Millar, Crookholm, Canonbie, all ewes big, small, fat and lean sold well throughout the sale which was in start contrast to pre sale predictions.
