As proven by the ringside of buyers here at Borderway more cattle are required weekly with today’s trade seeing another lift on the week. Topping our sale overall was Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth. With one of their Limousin cross heifers weighing 795kgs and selling to £2428.73 purchased by Mr Eric Hall the same home also sold the next highest priced Limousin cross to £2261.49 for 726kgs to E & JP Mulholland butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle and Best Simmental cross weighing 740kgs to £2319.90 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby sold 648kg British Blue to £2076.84 to Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill and Brampton. Top overall pence per kilo of 343.5p went to a 628kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop. British Blue crosses to 320.5p for the aforementioned From Messrs Dent, Elm House and Belted Galloways to 301.5p for 483kgs from Messrs Airey, The Close, Carlisle purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Steers sold to a day’s top of £2311.97 for 747kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle purchased by Mr Eric Hall. The same vendor sold next best at £2306.53 for 755kgs to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blue crosses to £2045.30 for 663kgs from Messrs Airey, The Close, Carlisle to Mr Eric Hall and Galloways to £1840.66 for 673kgs from Messrs Wallace, Gapshields, Brampton to Steven Wilson Butchers. PRIME BULLS: Another smaller show of 74 Prime bulls seeing trade far sharper on the week once again and this trade was seen on all shapes and sizes.  Top overall was a 924kg Limousin cross bull from Messrs Hyslop, Gillrigg, Lockerbie attaining £2656.50 .  Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick sold next best at £2647.17 for 878kgs purchased by A & D Meats.  Simmentals from Messrs Marshall, Starlaw Farm, Bathgate sold to £2346.50 for 805kgs.  663kg British Blue crosses to £2177.96 from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle purchased by Jewitt Meats.  Charolais to £2018.41 for 766kgs from Messrs Marshall, Starlaw Farm.   Top pence per kilo overall went to Messrs Brough’s British Blue cross selling to 328.5p the same home also sold best Limousin cross to 315.5p.

Dairy bred bulls sold to £1627.45 for 703kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Crichton, Rue Farm, Dumfries and to £1619.75 for 682kgs Holstein from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith.  Top price per kilo of 258.5p went to a 587kg Friesian from Messrs Crozier, Cowlyers Farm, Silloth and to 255.5p for another from Messrs Preston, Wedholme House, Wigton for 514kgs.

PRIME LAMBS : On Monday 9th September Harrrison & Hetherington held their weekly prime and cast sheep sale, a slightly reduced entry on the week met a more two tiered trade with well finished lambs in high demand at all weights. An overall average of 296p reflected this with plenty sheep trading well in excess of 310ppkg regardless of weight and type. Topping today at £230 and 511p was a tremendous Beltex cross lamb from Messrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall which sold to Lancashire Direct Halal. Blue Texels sold to £215 from Claremont Properties, Calthwaite and Dutch Spottied to £210 from Seamus Killen, Northern Ireland. Super heavies sold well to £208 x2 from Bassenthwaite Hall and £190 from Messrs Longlands, Tone Hall, Hexham. Scott Donaldson donned the box and returned to his roots this week to sell the cast sheep, with our trade seen to be the best last week, on a falling trade he miraculously managed to lift the average these topped at £280 for first time vendor Dan Stainthorpe, ewes would be short of demand with all the major outlets represented in Borderway, another day at the top of the leader board, with a special mention to a run of light Blackfaced lambs from Messrs Blackwood, which topped at £134 and averaged £94.79 for 33.29kgs, and would look a tremendous return on store trade for the same goods, light lambs are required weekly now with a great new order secured.
