ALSTON MOOR SALE OF MULE GIMMER LAMBS

On Wednesday 25th September the highly anticipated “Alston Moor” Sale of North of England mule lambs took place in Lazonby Market. The biggest one day sheep sale in the UK took place where 14,080 lambs fell under the hammer to average £154.97 +24.32, £157.18 +£24.15 (Nemsa), 148.55 + £22.43 (Non Nemsa). The sheep farming sector stood still to witness the harvest of the hills as buyers from all corners of the country descended on Lazonby to bask in the unmatched reputation as the centre for the North of England Mules. Tupping lambs more than matched the current trade however running lambs were described as pounds dearer compared to other outlets.
Before the sale the Pre Nemsa Show took place. A total of 18 pens went under inspection of judges Mr Stephen Ridky & Ross Sizmur with Dan Phillips acting as referee, after much deliberation the Champion Rossette and Bill Armstrong Memorial Trophy went to F & M Moore, Highside selling for £320. The introduction of the Peter Kidd Memorial trophy was had and awarded to the first prize pen from Phillip Dawson, The Lodge selling for £200 per life. Top price of the day went to Burrow & Rutter Armstrong, Langwathy Hall who sold to £500 and whose run of 60 averaged £240.83. Messrs Thompson, East Unthank sold 141 to average £194.60. The Champion pen from Brian & Freddie Moore sold for £320 and whose run of 130 averaged £184.19. Non Nemsa lambs topped at a pen of 10 from WM & C Wallace, Gapshields selling for £230 & whose run of 205 averaged £163.32. Tupping lambs were regularly between £160 - £180 while runners were £130 - £150. Many more would be sold to advantage in Lazonby. Take advantage of the markets reputation for selling mule lambs.
