PRIME CATTLE: Once again quality and numbers forward at Borderway’s weekly primestock sale of 64 prime steers and heifers seeing a rip roaring trade throughout the day. Top overall was an outstanding Limousin cross heifer weighing 785kgs and selling to £2492.38 for Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont and purchased by Pioneer Foods Carlisle. Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold a 667kgs Limousin cross to £2184.43 and Messrs Beaty also sold the top priced British Blue Heifer to £2258.04 for 744kgs to Mr Eric Hall. Top overall pence per kilo of 347.5p went to a 625kg Limousin cross from Crichton, Loughrigg and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. A 592kg Charolais cross to 303.5p from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle and a 744kg British Blue cross to the same money from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn. A native Galloway heifer sold to 293.5p for 580kgs from the same vendors. Steers peaked at £2330.88 for a 768kg Limousin cross from Messrs Millar, Arkleby Hall, Wigton and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle next best was a British Blue cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle selling to 711kgs to £2314.31 and Charolais to £2175.03 from Arkleby Hall, Wigton. Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Carlisle sold a marvellous run of Blue Grey steers to a top of £1833.12 for 701kgs and a 681kg Aberdeen Angus from Messrs McMaster, Blairbuy, Newton Stewart to £1828.49 to Mr Eric Hall. Top price per kilo steer came from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake selling the aforementioned 711kgs to 325.5p the same vendor also sold top priced Limousin cross to 313.5p for 704kgs. PRIME BULLS: A fantastic entry and quality show of 114 well fleshed Prime bulls forward at Borderways weekly sale. Trade well up on the week again seeing a days top of £2978.25 for a 950kg Limousin from Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot, Dumfries sold the next best with 888kgs to £2854.92 purchased by A & D Meats. A 1163kg Simmental from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan sold to £2576.05 and purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Blondes to £2552.81 for 799kgs from Messrs Wilshaw, Oulton Hall, Wigton and Charolais crosses to £2180.20 from Messrs Bell, Hallbankgate, Brampton for 809kgs to Bowland Foods, Preston. Natives topped at £1913.76 for 864kgs from Messrs Irving, The Heights, Wigton and Aberdeen Angus crosses to £1867.11 for 714kgs this came from a phenomenal run of 18 bulls from the SRUC, Easter Howgate, Edinburgh. Top overall pence per kilo of 328.5p went to a 794kg Limousin from R & J Graham, Airthrey Farm, Stirling with Messrs Stamper, Harrot Hill, Cockermouth closely following at 327.5p for 687kg both selling to A & D Meats.
Dairy bred bulls topped at £1664.88 for a 701kg Holstein from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith and purchased by Mutch Meats. A top price per kilo of 245.5p went to a 575kg Montbelairde from Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle to Bowland Foods. Two other dairy bred bulls made 243.50p, firstly for a 629kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan and secondly for a 628kg Holstein Friesian from Smallthwaite Farms, Penrith and finally Holsteins to 241.5p for 585kgs from Messrs Little Kirkbride, Wigton.

PRIME LAMBS : On Monday 30th September 2024 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep which saw a marvellous 151 vendors consign 4319 head of cast ewes and prime lambs. 1391 ewes forward today saw a lift of over 1000 on the year with Borderway becoming the local ewe town and choice of many , this section was heavily dominated by horned and mule ewes this week, with all types good to sell regardless of quality and finish, top of the day was a fantastic single Texel from Haas Side Farms, Lockerbie who topped at £320 to fantastic supporters Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd, other highlights include Beltex to £250, Suffolks to £210, Mules to £210 Cheviots to £152 and Hornies to £145.
2928 Prime lambs represent a small lift on the year with over 100 vendors consigning, trade set off briskly but would ease slightly as news of national rates started to filter to buyers, regardless a national leading average of 288p was achieved or pennies shy of £130, which is £10 up on the year, Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Hexham enjoyed the top spot again selling 41kg to £210 or 512ppkg which represents returns for best export lambs far beyond the reaches of others, plenty lambs traded in and around and indeed over £150 which got the final day of September is remarkable, a great result indeed for our ever growing support.
