Sale of Uncrossed Swaledale Ewes & Shearlings

On Friday 30th September, Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held the highly coveted sale of uncrossed Swaledale Ewes & Shearlings within Middleton in Teesdale Market. A total of 3669 went under the hammer to a larger ringside of buyers looking for quality to produce the next crop of mule gimmer lambs. A total ewe average of £138.91 was achieved +£20.50 while shearlings averaged £157.49 +£18. Due to the availability of both abortion vaccines vendors who acquired both would be rewarded with £20-£30 being the difference on vaccinated sheep. Before the sale the pre show took place with this years judge being Mr Richard Hutchinson. After overlooking the pens forward it was decided the champion trophy kindly donated by the Stephenson family went to F & MP Allinson, West Briscoe which later went to sell for £450 to Neil Hardisty, Ennerdale. The second prize pen & Reserve Champion pen went to Mr Peter Walton, Swarthymere which went to sell for £220 to Messrs Handly, Carnforth. C R Raine, Stanhope Gate sold the 4th prixe pen of ewes to £350 per life selling to Burncroft Farms. Shearlings met a delightful trade with top price going for £182 per head for a pen of 18. The dispersal from OM Wearmouth & Son, Howgill sold a pen of 12 to £180.

A great day was had with trade being desirable from the start to the finish, quality sheep were well sought after with Middleton the leading area for Swaledale Sheep in the UK.
