PRIME CATTLE: Yet another good entry of 63 prime steers and heifers were forward at Borderways weekly sale with trade seen to be sharper than ever. Top overall at £2485.77 came from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont, with a 798kg Charolais cross heifer and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. The same vendors also sold next best at £2361.92 for a 704kg Limousin cross again purchased by Mr Hall.
Top overall price per kilo of 335.50p went to Messrs Crichton’s 704kg Limousin cross heifer. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith, sold 640kg to 323.50 to R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton.

Steers sold to a top of £2461 for a 920kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Messrs Carter, Torkirra, Dumfries, to Mr Eric Hall. Charolais crosses sold to £2388.87 for 762kg from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie. Limousin crosses were up to £2371.10 for 724kg from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton, and £2321.98 for 709kg for Messrs Black, Halfway Well, both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top price per kilo of 328.50 went to Messrs Blakes 668kg Limousin cross with next best a 690kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton, selling to John Perry, Leeds.
Natives were forward in good numbers and sold exceptionally well with many more required weekly. Top overall was a 625kg Galloway heifer from Messrs Cornthwaite, Lockerbie receiving £1834.38, while a Blue Grey Steer sold to £1716.37 for 623kg from Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Carlisle.

PRIME BULLS: Another great show of 84 prime bulls forward at Borderway’s weekly sale, whereby very best quality bulls were slightly easier but all others met last weeks flying trade. Top overall at £2706.73 for the heaviest Limousin at 886kg from Messrs Illinworth, Howgillside, Lockerbie, selling to A & D Meats. Next best at £2470.15 was from Messrs Scott, Dalton Hook, Lockerbie with 778kg. Top price per kilo of 319.50p was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Sisson, Kelbarrow, Penrith, for 563kg Limousin cross and secondly by Messrs Mitchinson, Beech House, Carlisle selling a 649kg Limousin cross. The same home also sold top Blonde cross to 309.60 for 645kg.

Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1884.47 for a 729kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Sloan, Woodend, Moffat selling to Jewit Meats, Springmoor.
Holstein Friesians to £1649.77 for 722kg for Messrs Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat selling to Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. Top price per kilo of 258ppk went to the 729kg Fleckvieh from Woodend Farm.

PRIME LAMBS: On Monday 7^th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which drew another fantastic entry of 4531 head forward from 130 vendors, this again showing an increase on last years date. All classes were good to sell throughout with well finished sheep of all categories remaining very much in favour with purchasers.

3216 Prime lambs were penned this week with all classes showing a slight lift on the week to average 294p overall with the SQQ at exactly the same rate, best end export sheep regularly sold above and beyond 350p to a top of 520p and £208 for a fabulous Beltex lamb from Messrs Musgrave Cardew Hall, Dalston selling to Mr Robert Skelton. Heavy lambs sold to £196 for Texels from Messrs Robson, Merryshields, Capheaton. 95 lots sold over £150 a head with the leading consignment average being claimed by new vendors Messrs Halliday, Crawthat, Lockerbie who sold 46 lambs to average £161.46 topping at £180 for a pen of Beltex lambs. Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall and Messrs Airey, New Grange followed closely behind seliing 28 and 42 lambs at £161.32 and £160.83 respectively. Leading the heavy averages was Messrs Harrison, Sceugh, Calthwaite who sold a run of 30 Texel x Mule lambs to average £158.50.

1315 cast sheep sold this week, would be slightly sharper on the week with averages remaining the same for a show which would offer less quality on the whole, each and every type had plenty interest with buyers bidding freely, top this week was £250 paid for a Texel ewe from Messrs Athey, High Lovelady Shield, Alston, Suffolks topped at £212 from Messrs Millar, Woodhouse Hill, Lockerbie with Hill ewes to £188 for Cheviot from Messrs Dent, Beanwham, Haltwhistle, Mukes sold to £144 from Messrs Graves, Hesket Demain with horned ewes to £101 for Blackies from Danny McGregor, Longrigg, Roweltown.
