Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 15th March Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A larger show of 469 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and 1661 prime sheep were on offer on Monday.

PRIME BULLS: An outstanding show of 106 prime bulls forward with one of the best seen for some time with a trade to match with 4 bulls over £2000, 7 over £1900 and 18 over £1700.  Top overall was a Blonde from Messrs Wilshaw, Oulton Hall, Wigton achieving £2148.30 and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Limousins sold to £2074.88 from Messrs D & R Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie purchased by Brockwood Abattoir, Charolais to £2028.36 from Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan and British Blues to £1934.62 from Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres, Lanark.  Simmentals to £1745.63 from Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg, Newton Stewart purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Beef Shorthorns from Thrimby Farms, Penrith sold to £1722.25 purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Top overall pence per kilo was Messrs Gerrards British Blue bull achieving 269.5ppk, Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres sold another to 262.5ppk with Limousins to 253.5ppk from Stratton Farms.

Vendors that braved the distance were more than rewarded, Borderway Mart not as far away as they thought, Stratton Farms, Headley, Berkshire having travelled a 602 mile round trip with their 12 Limousin prime bulls selling to average 241ppk and a grand total of £1678.22 and Messrs Barclay, Aberdeenshire selling four 640kgs bulls to average 242ppk and a grand total of £1549.60.  Finally, Messrs Gerrard, Moris Farm, Northwich sold a British Blue to £1722.11 equating to 639kg, 269.5ppk. which was also the top pence per kilo.

Dairy bred bulls in smaller numbers but a fantastic trade achieved for all.  Top overall was a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Murray, Conheath, Dumfries achieving £1457.55 and purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Norwegian Reds to £1400.43 from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and Friesians to £1354.98 from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton again purchased by Bowland Foods.  Top pence per kilo of 210.5ppk was paid twice, firstly, Messrs Preston, Wedholme House, Wigton for a Friesian purchased by Bowland Foods and secondly by Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of only 41 prime steers and heifers forward whereby trade was exceeding expectations throughout the sale.  Steers seen a days overall top of £1798 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle, this was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Nicholson sold a run of 6 steers to average 231ppk with an overall average of £1745.56.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold another to £1770.20.  British Blue crosses peaked at £1742.65 again from Messrs Nicholson and this time purchased by Messrs E Fairlie, Letham.  Charolais crosses to £1692.27 from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie purchased again by Pioneer Foods.  Top pence per kilo steers were Limousin crosses from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks receiving 241.5p twice.

Heifers peaked at £1530.36 for a Limousin from Messrs Graham, Rose Castle, Carlisle purchased by Kings Butchers, others to £1492.65 from Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm, Bishop Auckland purchased by Messrs Fairlie. Messrs Barker, Little Broomhills, Carlisle sold top British Blue cross to £1445.83 purchased by Jewitt Meats.

Top overall pence per kilo of 249.5ppk was attained by Messrs Philipson, Glebe Farm, Penrith purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brockwood Abattoir, Halifax, others to 241.55ppk from Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm purchased by Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A larger show of 332 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to an ever increasing ringside of buyers and once again trade was sharper.  Messrs Gerrard, Moris Farm, Knutsford sold a British Blue cow for 862kg, 265.5p, £2288 bought by Jimmy Woods for Bowland Foods.

Mr Neil Barclay, South Road, Insch run of cows topped at 907kg, 208.5p, £1891 and 672kg, 215.5p, £1448 for Limousins bought by Owain Llyr and Bowland Foods.  Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold a Limousin cow for 853kg, 189.5p, £1616 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 709kg, 223.5p, £1584 to Jewitt Meats.  Mr Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall run of Limousin cows topped at 730kg, 214.5p, £1565 to Bowland Foods.  Messrs Bell, Woodhall, Bardon Mill run of cows topped at 717kg, 206.5p, £1480 to Jewitt Meats.

All classes of dairy cast cows were in great demand from start to finish with 35 selling for over £1000.  Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill run of Holstein cross cows topped at 924kg, 145.5p, £1344 to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Bulman & Son, Bank House run of Friesian cows topped at 904kg, 146.5p, £1324 also to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Weightman, Highwood Nook run of Holstein cross cows topped at 851kg, 154.5p, £1314 to Charles Kirkpatrick.    Messrs Workman, The Beeches run of Montbeliarde cross cows topped at 857kg, 151.5p, £1298 and 816kg, 148.5p, £1211 both purchased by Dovecote Park.  Messrs Errington, Annfield sold a Holstein cross cow for 833kg, 151.5p, £1262 to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Wilson & Sons, Marsh House sold a Holstein cross cow for 814kg, 151.5p, £1233 also to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Marshall, Hardgrave Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 831kg, 147.5p, £1225 also to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths Holstein cross cows topped at 815kg, 147.5p, £1202 to Dovecote Park.

CAST BULLS: A good show of 10 stock bulls were on offer with all classes being the dearest to date.  Thrimby Farm Ltd, Thrimby Hall sold two outstanding British Blue bulls for 1116kg, 199.5, £2226 and 1168kg, 183.5p, £2143 both purchased by Jimmy Woods for Bowland Foods.  Messrs Brown & Co, Little Culmain sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1130kg, 158.5p, £1791 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Warden, Skelfhill sold the top priced Simmental stock bull for 1179kg, 148.5p, £1750 to Bowland Foods.  Messrs Armstrong & Sons, Broomhills sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1047kg, 165.5p, £1732 to Mike Helliwell.  Messrs Miller, Tarn Lodge sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 1010kg, 138.5p, £1398 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 15th March H&H held their weekly sale of prime sheep with another strong entry of 1661 head.  A much plainer show of hoggs on the whole were forward with many now showing the tail end of their crop, those with well finished hoggs were treated to another barnstorming trade, with an overall average of 290ppk.

Top of the tree this week was John Fell Snr, Stanger Hill, Wigton who sold Texel hoggs to a top of £170 for a superb 47kg hogg; not to be outdone, John fell Jnr brought another superb run of mule hoggs to top the section at an eyewatering £150 per head demonstrating that every weight, grade and breed is catered for at Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo this week was 384ppk for a pen of 5 Beltex from AG Dempster, Castlehill, Tundergarth.

Hill hoggs sold to £148 for Cheviots from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown and 307.5ppk for Herdwicks from Messrs Bowman, Brampton Fell.  Messrs Fisher sold 320 hill hoggs to average £134.72 a head.

CAST SHEEP: Trade continues to fly with numbers being in short supply.  Topping todays sale at £132 was Texels from Messrs Grieve, Whiteside.  Meaty sheep of all classes were well bid for with mules being in cracking demand selling to £109 twice from Messrs Grieve and Messrs Sanderson, Swallowdene, Blackface to £105 from Messrs Dixon, The Stobbs and Swales to £70 from Messrs Morton, Church Farm.
