PRIME CATTLE: A great offering of 80 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly Primestock sale. Trade as ever now a days, was flying throughout with vendors travelling from all over to enjoy it. Top overall today was a fantastic Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont selling 738kgs to £2564.55 to John Penny, Leeds. Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold next best at £2472.93 for 774kgs and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Stamper, also sold best Simmental cross at £2266.79 for 783kgs and best British Blue cross at £2222.93 for 831kgs. Galloway heifers topped at £1908.99 for 683kgs from Messrs Cornthwaite, Lockerbie and Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill sold best Aberdeen Angus cross heifer to £1863.86 for 679kgs. Top pence per kilo heifer and top overall came from Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth with a 678kg Limousin cross selling to 349.5p to R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton followed by Messrs Beaty’s sale topper at 347.50p
Steers saw a top of £2452.98 for 796kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton to Mr Eric Hall, Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle sold next best at £2421.65 for 770 kgs. Arkleby Hall sold top Saler cross at £2264.62 for 796kgs, British Blues sold to £2258.03 from Messrs Robson, Merryshields, Newcastle for 759kgs. Charolais to £2182.28 for 795kgs from Messrs McGhie, Mid Threave, Newton Stewart. Natives were forward in good numbers and sold to £1843.67 for a 662kg Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall, Kirkby Stephen. Belted Galloways to £1727.31 for 618kgs from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton and Galloways to £1727.31 from Messrs Cornthwaite, Lockerbie for 618kgs and a 577kg Blue Grey Steer from Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Carlisle sold to £1560.79. Top pence per kilo steers at 327.50p was achieved twice. Firstly for a 710kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Park, Wigton selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and secondly by Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton selling 749kgs.

Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie sold next best at £2730.60 for 888kgs also for a Limousin. Charolais to £2456.22 for an 804kg Charolais from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries. Aberdeen Angus to £2405.93 for 867kgs from Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan. British Blue Crosses to £2343.96 from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle. Simmentals to £2330.48 for 805kgs from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie. Beef Shorthorns to £2108.69 for 771kgs from Messrs Steen, Coxhill, Moffat.
Top pence per kilo of 317.5p was attained twice firstly by Messrs Nimmo, Bogside with 848kgs and secondly by Messrs Brough, Old Rectory with 721kgs.

Messrs Patterson & Son, Corriehills Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow for 885kg, 231.5ppk or £2048 to Owan Llyr. Messrs Robson & Sons, Merryshields run of heifers topped at 678kg, 285.5ppk or £1935 and to 672kg, 277.5ppk or £1864 for a British Blue cross and a Blonde cross purchased by Owain Llyr and Michael Helliwell.

PRIME LAMBS: On Monday 14th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which drew another fantastic entry of 5097 head forward this again showing a huge increase on last years date. All classes were good to sell throughout with well finished sheep of all categories remaining very much in favour with purchasers.
4074 Prime lambs were penned this week with an average of 291.09p overall, topping the trade was Messrs Urwin, Hill House who sold a beltex lamb to £225 and 500ppkg next best on the day was £208 or 452ppkg for a Texel lamb from Messrs Jones Graig Goch.
1315 cast sheep sold this week with an average of £110.37. Weight and finish in short supply and carrying a heavy premium topping the ewes this week was a Texel consigned by Messrs Jones, Graig Goch closely followed by a Beltex at £260 from the same home.
