PRIME CATTLE: A good entry of 63 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly sale of primestock whereby a very good offering of cattle were available, biggest bullocks were slightly easier on the week with everything else selling fantastically well. Top overall trade on the day went to the heaviest animal on the day a 803kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle achieving £2453.19 to Mr Eric Hall the same vendors sold 723kgs to £2309.99 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais cross heifers weighing 732kgs from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfriesshire sold to £2133.70. top overall pence per kilo of 323.5p went to Newbiggin Farm with a 639kg Limousin cross and Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton sold 606kgs to 320.5p. Steers sold to a days top of £2426.87 for 797kgs from Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle and to £2357.70 for 782kgs from the same home. British Blues to £2265.73 from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton for 749kgs and to £2202.53 for a 753kg Charolais cross from Mr Wilson, Bowscale, Maryport. Top pence per kilo of 318.5p went to a 668kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bother Parks, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods and British Blues to 311.5p for 716kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of 76 prime bulls forward seeing trade firmer on the week for all classes no big heavy bulls forward on this day despite this the one heavy bull that was forward was a 936kg British blue from Messrs Hewson Burgh Head, Carlisle. Topping the sale at £2616.12, 768kg Limousin from Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth sold to £2400. 716kg Simmentals from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie selling to £2058.50 and a 730kg Aberdeen Angus to £1952.75 from Messrs Kerr, Fountainhill, Galashields. Top price per kilo of 323.5p went to a 661kg Limousin from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle and the same vendors sold the best British blue cross at 313.5p for 672kgs. Black and White bulls were a flying trade with one of the dearest trades seen with a new record set at £2083.14 for a 852kg Holstein/Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie and an 828kg Holstein from the same home to £1966.80 a top price per kilo of 259.50 went to an 654kg Fleckvieh from Seymour Farms, Wigton while Holstein/Friesian s sold to 246.50p and 245.5p from Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle.

PRIME LAMBS: On Monday 21st October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which drew another fantastic entry of 4037 head forward overall quality was down but certainly not the price. Meat was well bid for their just wasn’t enough of it to satisfy our buyers demands.
3170 Prime lambs were penned this week with an average of 287p overall, topping the trade was Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head who sold a Texel lamb to £210 next best breed on the day was £182 for a Beltex lamb from the same home. Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall achieved 500ppk for his texel lamb on the day.
867 cast sheep sold this week with a local ewe show this week being far dearer on the week an average of £104.36 was achieved with plain types. Topping the cast trade was Messrs McCrone, Pasturewood for a beltex ewe selling to £300. Texels saw a top of £230 twice both consigned by Messrs Merral, The Green.
