Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale on Tuesday night, when 4880 sheep were forward consisting of 3383 Prime lambs, 812 Cast sheep and 685 Store lambs.

Topping the sale at £214 were a pair of 55kg Beltex cross lambs from Messrs Dodd, Skylin, Temple Sowerby.

Topping at 433.3p/kg were a pen of five 42kg Rouge cross lambs which made £182 from Messrs Fell, Chapel Farm, Keswick.

This home also sold 44kg Rouge crosses to make £188 (427.3p/kg) with a pen of fourteen 44kg Dutch Texel cross lambs making £185 (420.5p/kg) and a pen of fifteen 43kg Rouge cross lambs making £167 (388.4p/kg) also from this home. The consignment of fifty Rouge and Dutch Texel cross lambs from Chapel Farm sold to average 43.5kg £173.51 (398.9p/kg).

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside sold a pair of 53kg Texel cross lambs to make £194.

Messrs Lee, Carkin Moor Farm sold 49kg Beltex cross lambs to make £180.

Messrs Bainbridge, Bonnygate Farm, Soulby sold a pen of four 37kg lambs to make £152 (410.8p/kg).

Messrs Fairburn, Marriforth, Ripon sold a pen of 41kg lambs to make £166 (404.9p/kg).

Messrs Askwith, Middle Mown Meadows, Crook sold a pen of five 39kg lambs to make £157 (402.6p/kg).

Messrs Skelton, Low House, Maryport sold a pen of 41kg lambs to make £164 (400p/kg).

Messrs Paul, Sawbridge Hall, Bleatarn sold 43kg lambs to make £169 (393p/kg).

Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, Soulby sold a pen of six 40kg lambs to make £158 (395p/kg).

Suffolk cross lambs topped at £163.50 for a pen of ten 57kg from Messrs Fox, St Johns Kirk, Biggar with this home also selling a pen of eighteen 57kg Suffolk cross to make £162.50 and a pen of twenty two 58kg Texel cross lambs £165 and fifteen 52kg Suffolk cross lambs to make £158 (303.8p/kg) also from this home. The consignment of 189 good meat commercial Suffolk & Texel cross lambs from St Johns Kirk sold to average 52kg £151.41 (291.2p/kg).

Mule lambs topped at £135 for a pen from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill Farm, Distington.

Messrs Hayton, Asby Grange sold a pen of fourteen Mules to make £129.

An SQQ average of 290.94p/kg and an overall sale average of 282.04p/kg was achieved for 3383 lambs with this including over 500 Mule and horned lambs.

Good meated, well fed lambs of all classes and weights were still good to sell and in demand, with a massive proportion of the sale being unfed, leaner grass lambs and these were finding more resistance.

Cast sheep topped at £262 for a Texel tup from Messrs Marston, South View, Winton.

Beltex cross ewes topped at £228 for a pair from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm.

Swaledale ewes topped at £86 for a pen of four from Messrs Akrigg, Manor House Farm, Skipton.
