Kirkby Stephen Prize Show and Sale of Suckled Calves

Kirkby Stephen, Faraday Road, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4QL

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual prize show and sale of Suckled Calves when a catalogued entry of 445 calves were on offer.

Topping the sale at £3200 was todays champion a ten month old Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall, Great Asby which was bought by Messrs Hargreaves, Walton Hall Farm, Preston.

The Pre-Sale Show saw one of the best turnouts of quality calves put in front of our Judge Amy Vance, Newton Stewart.

This home sold seven month old Limousin heifers to £2600 selling to the judge, with six month old British Blue heifer making £2300 and six month old Limousin heifer making £2200 both selling to Messrs Slack, Plumtree House, with another a seven month old Limousin heifer also making £2200 selling to Messrs Walton, Hexham and a ten month old Limousin heifer selling to £2100 selling to Messrs Montgomerie.

Messrs Hayton, Asby Grange, Great Asby sold ten month old British Blue cross heifers to top at £2600 which was purchased by Messrs Barnett, Shap.

Messrs Sedgley Low Bank House, Carnforth sold the reserve champion a nine month old British blue steer to make £1850 selling to Messrs Harrison, Driffield.

Messrs Brown, Asby Hall also sold a ten month old Limousin steer to £1845 to Messrs Amos, Leicester.

Messrs Hayton Asby Grange, also sold twelve month old Limousin and British blue steers to £1805.

Smart bred young cattle were off the clock with six and seven month old British Blue heifers selling to £1645 and six month old British Blue heifers selling to £1600 from Messrs Hayton, Asby Grange. With six month old Limousin heifers selling to £1605 from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall. Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, Soulby sold six month old British Blue steers to £1600. With many other 6 to 10 month old steers and heifers selling between £1500 £1645.

Some fantastic consignment averages were achieved for large consignments with Messrs Hayton, Asby Grange selling 40 calves to average £1426.92 which was up £188.17 up on the year and Messrs Brown, Asby Hall selling 60 calves to average £1416.86. which was up £125.86 up on the year.

A Steer sale average of £1237.58 (up £10.33 on the year) and a heifer sale average of £1221.8 (up £47.94 on the year) was achieved. An overall sale average of £1230.60 (up £26.15) was achieved.

62 calves sold between £1500 and £3200.
