PRIME CATTLE: A superb entry of 84 Prime steers and heifers forward and with extra numbers this brought extra trade with all vendors leaving highly delighted. Topping our sale today at £2446.47 for 738kg were local farmers Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton for a Limousin cross steer. Messrs Telford, Edenlin, Carlisle sold next best of £2441.92 for 832kgs both purchased by Mr Eric Hall. British Blue crosses from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold to £2268.45 for 710kgs to A & D Meats. A Fleckvieh from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt Farm, Hexham sold to £2061.81 for 883kgs, the same home sold the top priced Native bred animal to £1786.22 for a 673kg Whitebred Shorthorn. Top pence per kilo steer went to Hundith Houses 738kg Limousin attaining 331.5p, while closely followed by Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle with 736kg selling to 330.5p.
Heifers saw a days top of £2433.21 for a 734kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle selling to Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill and Brampton. Next best at £2298.42 came from the same vendors selling 677kgs to Morgan Helliwell. Top overall pence per kilo on the day was Messrs Story’s 677kg Limousin peaking at 339.5p while the next best was the same vendors 626kg Limousin cross achieving 337.5p.

PRIME BULLS: A much greater show of 111 prime bulls forward resulting in a marvellous trade throughout seeing it every bit as good as last week if not a penny or two more. Best overall came from Messrs Watret, Maulscastle, Annan with a 780kg British Blue equating to £2538.90, the same vendor sold 757kgs to £2433.70 for another. Limousins to £2530.31 for 802kgs from Messrs Eve, Stubbsgill, Wigton and 799kgs from Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle to £2377.03. Charolais to £2214.45 for 798kgs for Maulscastle Farm, Annan and Simmentals to £2176 for 773kgs for Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie. Top overall pence per kilo of 325.5p and 321.5p went to the aforementioned British Blues for Messrs Watret, Maulscastle. Limousins sold to 318.5p for 640kgs from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle.

Prime lambs defied all pre-sale predictions and against the odds we lifted returns on the week, an overall average of 287p and SQQ 292p was achieved for all forward, to a top of £205 and 500p for export lambs from Messrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall, Keswick, with heavies topping at £198 for Suffolks from Messrs Jackson, Maulscastle. Mules topped at a fantastic 284p from Messrs Hamilton, Kirkton of Crawford, Abington, it was great to see so many new and old faces this week , all classes needed next week once more.
