PRIME CATTLE: Yet another unbelievable trade seen in Borderway at their weekly Primestock sale of steers and heifers whereby the 78 forward averaged a whopping £2025.86 up to a days overall top of £2467.25 for a 710kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby selling to John Penny, Leeds.  Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold next best at £2462.90 for 717kgs to Bowland Foods, Preston and another to £2431.71 for 738kgs to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont sold a 30 month old heifer to £2224.13 for 659kgs to R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle and Charolais to £2145 for 653kgs from Elm House, and purchased by Pioneer Foods.

Top overall pence per kilo of 363.50p went to a superb Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Dent, Elm House for a 631kgs to R & JP Mulholland Butchers.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold 554kgs to 355.5p.  Steers sold to a top of £2425.70 for a 764kg Limousin cross from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton to Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Miller also sold next best, a British Blue cross weighing 765kgs to £2421.23.  Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill and Messrs Story, Newbiggin sold £721 and £777kg steers to £2418.96 and £2404.82.  Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton sold  over thirty month old Charolais crosses to a top of £2351.19 for 866kg to Morgan Helliwell.

Three steers sold to 335.5p, firstly was 721kgs from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, secondly Messrs Teasdale, Grindon Hill, Hexham and Messrs Bowe, Bother Parks, Wigton.  Best natives topped at 297.5p for a 513kg Blue Grey Steer from Messrs Bell, Woodhall, Hexham, 295.5p for 531kg Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Beattie, Muircleugh, Dumfries and 291.50 for a 590kg Whitebred Shorthorn from Messrs Moscrop, Ryeclose, Carlisle.

PRIME BULLS: A slightly larger entry of 76 Prime bulls forward seeing a further lift on trade on the week seeing the best three Limousin bulls all sell over £3000 to a top of £3467.98 for a 1043kg Limousin from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith. The other two from the same home weighed 996kg and 982kgs selling to £3351.54 and £3274.90 with the top price being purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Goldsbrough, Oakrigg, Moffat sold 1210kg Simmentals to £2704.05, 1002kgs to £2640.29 and a 920kg bull from Palmallet Farm, Newton Stewart to £2626.60.   Charolais to £2192.61 for 742kg from Messrs Bell, Hallbankgate, Brampton.  A 660kg Aberdeen Angus sold to £2009.70 from Messrs Stamper, Harrot Hill, Cockermouth.  Messrs Stamper also achieved the top overall pence per kilo on the day of 337.50p for a 713kg Limousin cross, while Messrs Jenkinson, Limousin sold to 336.50p and Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Lanark sold 703kgs to 334.5p.  Best Simmentals crosses sold to 316.5p from Messrs Bell, Woodhall, Hexham with one of their 557kg bulls.

Dairy bred bulls sold fantastically well with a days top of £1631.34 achieved for a 684kg Friesian from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie and a top overall price per kilo at 275.5p for a 533kg Friesian from Messrs Gringer, Kiln Croft, Wigton.  Holstein Friesians sold to 248.5p for 632kgs from Messrs Salkeld, South View, Carlisle.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A smaller show of 272 Cast cows was forward with all classes being in demand.

Messrs Studholme & son, Nealhouse Farm sold the top priced Limousin x cow from 826kg, 259.5p £2143 and the top priced British Blue x cow for 881kg, 241.5p £2126 bought by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Nimmo, Bogside Farm, run of Limousin cows topped at 887kg, 233.5p, £2124 and 845kg, 243.5p, £2057 both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Dempster, Castlehill run of cows topped at 773kg, 237.5p £1835 for a Charolais x to Alan Jarvis.  Messrs Fish, Crossrigg Farm sold a Hereford for 930kg, 195.5p £1818 to Alan Jarvis.

Mr George Wilson, Reddings Farm, run of Limousin cows sold for 656kg, 275.5p £1807 and 637kg, 255.5p £1627 both to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Robson & Sons, Merryshields run of cows topped at 651kg, 271.5p £1767 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

All classes of dairy cast cows were in demand, Messrs Rome, Fauldie run of Holstein x cows topped at 868kg, 199.5p, £1731 and 787kg, 197.5p, £1554 to Charles Kirkpatrick and Michael Helliwell.

PRIME LAMBS : On Monday 11^th November 2024 Harrison & Heatherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which once again attracted a large entry of sheep from far and wide, a total of 4620 sheep were presented to our full complement of buyers once again. 3471 lambs sold this week produced an all in market average of 312p, SQQ 319p this translated to a pounds per head average of £142.28 a rise of £6.05 on the week, which once again proved untouchable to other markets on the day. Leading the days trade was Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall who sold Beltex Lambs to £222 which also topped per kilo at 529p, selling to Bowland Food Ltd , Preston the £5 a kilo mark was broken by a further two vendors Messrs Scott, Thirlwall Castle and Messrs Forster, East Wharmley who both travelled west along the A69 to enjoy a superior trade thet cash lambs at 524p and 505p or £220 and £192 respectively both lots purchased by Yorkshire Halal Meat Ltd, Ossett. New vendors Messrs Cooper, Govals Farm, Forfar broke the £200 barrier selling 50kg Texel cross lambs at £4 a kilo or £200 selling to Yorkshire Halal Meat Ltd, Ossett. Leading the consignor averages this week was Messrs Foley, Mirlaw house who headed west with 40 Suffolk X lambs and sold their 4 pens at £197, £193 (x2) and £185 to average an eye watering £191 or 316p for their 60kg monster trucks. All weights grades and types are actively bid for, we have homes for them all!!

1149 Cast sheep sold this week with a massive entry of horned, hill and mule ewes ,again a trade of note nationally levelling at £120.65 with one vendor who ventured west reporting his plainer ewes sold today £15 ahead of his better draw on Friday, heavier ewes in shorter supply at this time of year, but we saw a top of £300 for Charollais ewes from Messrs Trafford , Springfield, Greysouthern. Texels to £240 for cross ewes from Messrs Sparke, Little Swinburne, Hexham. Mules to £195, Hill sheep to £190 for Cheviots and hornies to £113 for swales which averaged a fantastic £82.60, with the same message, you bring them, and we will do the rest!
