PRIME CATTLE: The numbers keep rolling in and growing at Borderways weekly Primestock sale with 86 Prime steers and heifers on offer to a growing ringside of buyers. Trade saw no easing with full steam ahead in every ones mission statement.  Heifers once again topped the day’s trading with Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont selling the highest price of the day to £2605.76 for a 779 kg Limousin cross purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont was next in line selling 792kgs to £2546.28 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle while Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith selling the next best Limousin at £2441.73 to Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill and Brampton.  Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Appleby sold best British Blue cross 740kgs to £2497.50.  Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall, Kirkby Stephen sold a 719kg Dairy bred British Blue to £2290.02 both purchased by  Eric Hall.  Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria sold 698kg Blonde cross to £2258.03.  Messrs Cornthwaite, Lockerbie sold a 481kg pure Galloway to £1498.32.  Top pence per kilo and top overall went to a 559kg Limousin cross heifer from George Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna with 559kgs to 347.5p.  Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor sold 693kgs to 343.5p to Bowland Foods, Preston and Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold 715kg to 341.5p to Steven Wilson Butchers.  British Blues to 337.5p for 740kgs from Terrys Fam, Appleby.   Blondes to 333.5p for 653kgs for West Farm, Aspatria and Galloways to 311.5p for 481kgs from David Cornthwaite.

Steers topped at a healthy £2373.89 for a 743kg Limousin from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont and another to £2351.45 for 718kgs from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie purchased by Mr Eric Hall and Pioneer Foods. Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton topped the British Blues selling  814kg dairy bred to £2323.97.  OTM Charolais from Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton sold to £2242.50 for 780kg to Jewitt Meats.  Natives sold to £1719.91 for 586kg Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall.  Galloways to £1689.80 for 568kgs from Messrs Whitfield, Batey Shield, Haltwhistle and an OTM Blue Grey from Thomas Moscrop, Rye Close, Carlisle sold to £1613.65 for 590kgs.

Top price per kilo of 337.5p was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie selling 637kgs Limousin and secondly by Messrs Sisson, Kelbarrow, Penrith for 658kg.

PRIME BULLS: A shortage of 74 bulls forward at Borderways weekly Primestock sale.  Trade continues to surpass all vendors expectations with a very keen interest around the strong Borderway Primestock ring.

Top overall on the day was an over thirty month old Limousin from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm, Wigton selling 1012kgs to £2929.74.  Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith also sold an over thirty month old Limousin to £2755.25 for 1030kgs.  British Blues sold to £2562.08 for an 885kg OTM from Messrs Airey, Brownchesters, Otterburn.  Sean Mitchell, Grassknop, Penrith sold an under thirty month old Charolais weighing 842kgs to £2471.27 and Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan selling 779kgs to £2442.17.  A much lighter 665kg Blonde from Grassknop Farm, Penrith sold to £2151.28.  Top pence per kilo of 326.5p went to a 629kg Limousin cross from Tom Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle and Messrs Callion, Balfornought, Stirling sold a 750kg Limousin to 325.5p.  A Blonde from Grassknop Farm sold to 323.5p for 665kg and to 319.5p for 589kgs from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House.  Stabilisers to 319.5p for a 609kg bull from Messrs Ritson, The Swaites, Brampton and Charolais to 313.5p for 779kg from Greenfield Farm, Annan.

In the Black and Whites very little weight was evident throughout but a flying trade achieved for all classes.  Top overall of £1342.63 went to the heaviest Holstein Friesian at only 575kgs from Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith and a top overall price per kilo of 246.0p went to Messrs Preston, Wed Holme House, Wigton for a 474kg Friesian.

DA Harrison & Co, hill House Farm run of cows topped at 795kg, 281.5ppk or £2237 for a British Blue cross and to 815kg, 254.5ppk or £2074 for a Limosuin purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm run of Limousin cows sold for 920kg, 219.5ppk or £2019 to Charles Kirkpatrick.
