PRIMESTOCK SALE
MONDAY 25TH NOVEMBER 2024
PRIME CATTLE: Once again the numbers keep rolling into the number one weekly primestock ring in the north, with another great show of 73 prime steers and heifers forward, selling to the dearest trade of the year. Once again a whole sale average in excess of £2000 was achieved.
Top overall was a 766kg Limousin cross steer of Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton, selling to £2582.25 to A & D Meats. Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle sold the best Charolais cross to £2487.98 for 735kg to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top price per kilo steer went to Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie, selling a 683kg Limousin cross to 347.50p, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.
Heifers sold to £2407.13 for a Charolais cross from returning vendors Messrs Pearson, High Plasketlands, Maryport, the heifer was 735kg and sold to Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth, sold another at 774kgs to £2395.53 again to Mr Eric Hall. DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton sold an outstanding run of over thirty-month heifers and sold to a top of £2314.95 for 690kg selling to Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale, another heifer from the same vendors sold to £2308.24 for 688kgs to Bowland Foods, Preston. British Blue cross heifers sold to £2144.11 for Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head, Carlisle.
Top overall price per kilo for heifers of 364.5p went to a 498kg Limousin cross from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna, selling to Bowland Foods.
Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries, sold to 363.5p for 630kg to R&JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle. Charolais crosses sold twice to 337.5p, first by Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby and secondly by Messrs Pearson, High Plasketlands. Galloway heifers sold to 297.50p for 542kgs for Messrs Cornthwaite, Lockerbie. More natives are required weekly to satisfy demand.

PRIME BULLS:
A fantastic entry of 109 prime bulls were forward, selling to an absolutely flying trade, quality on the whole would be down and less weight on offer but despite this a days top of £2566.81 went to a pure Limousin of Messrs Scott, Dalton Hook, Lockerbie, for 779kgs. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan, sold 747kgs to £2498.72. An over thirty month Charolais weighing 927kgs sold to £2516.81 for Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley, Hexham. Simmentals sold to £2425.12 for 736kgs for Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan.
Natives topped at £2148.13 for 875kg for Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith with a Hereford, while Aberdeen Angus to £2035.62 for 713kgs for the first time vendors Messrs McIntosh, Genoch Mains, Stranraer. Top price per kilo overall was a 709kg Limousin for Messrs Jardine, Yett Farm, Lockerbie, achieving 335.5p, matching this same price were Upper Brydekirk Farm, Annan, with 656kgs.
Black & White bulls sold to £1956.50 for 860kg for a Holstein Friesian for Messrs Johnstone, Boghead, Dumfries. Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown, sold a 690kg Friesian to £1873.35 and a top overall pence per kilo of 271.50 went to the very same animal.
Next Monday will be Christmas show week and all show bulls must be penned by 9.30am. Normal weekly quality type bulls will bery much be required next week also.

A large show of 315 Cat Cows and Stock Bulls were forward with a trade other markets can only dream of and over 20 buyers, with 30 selling for 2000 plus, and 5 for over £3.00 per kilo.
D A Harrison, Hill House Farm sold a run of cows to top at 636kg, 323.5p and £2057 and 771kg at 283.5p and £2185 for a 4 year old Limousin Cross Cow purchased by Jewitts and David Barker. Kedzlie Farms run of cows topped at 843kg, 299.5kg at £2524 for a 12 year old Blue cross and 819kg, 303.5p at £2485 for a 5 and a half year old British Blue cross and 647kg, 315.5p and £2041 for a 4 year old. Limousin cross purchased by David Barker, Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr John Clayton of Bradford, sold Limousin cows for 885kg, 277.5p to £2455 and 803kg, 287.5p and £2308 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Messrs Armstrong, Terrance Farm, sold a Limousin heifer for 635kg, 315.5p and £2073 to Alan Jarvis. Maxwell Farming’s run of Angus cows topped at 555kg, 305.5p to £1695 to David Barker. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, sold a Simmental cow for 1003kg, 239.5kg to £2402 and a young Simmental for 684kg 299.5p to £2048 to David Barker and Alan Jarvis. Messrs Walton, Penpeugh, Hexham, sold a run to cows to top at 818kg, 269.5p and £2204 for a Blue cross to Charles Kirkpatrick.
All classes of dairy cast cows were 15p up on the week.
Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House, sold a run of Holstein cross cows, topping at 880kg, 193.5p to £1702 for a 6-and-a-half-year-old Holstein cross cow and 821kg, 197.5p to £1621 for a 6-and-a-half-year-old Norwegian Red bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Scotbeef. Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, sold Holstein cross cows to top at 902kg, 185.5p to £1673 to Charlie Anderson. Messrs Woodman & Son, Hill House, sold a 5-and-a-half-year-old Holstein cross cow for 800kg, 207.5p to £1660 to Philip Bowes. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill, sold Holstein cross cows to a top of 873kg, 189.5p and £1654 for a 5-and-a-half-year-old cow and a Holstein cross heifer sold at 608kg for 235.5p and £1431 to Charles Kirkpatrick and Alan Jarvis. Messrs Todd, Wyndham House, sold a run of Montbeliarde cross cows, topping at 789kg, 205.5p and £1621 for a 6 year old bought by Scotbeef. Messrs Wilson, Wood Farm, sold a Holstein cross cow for 874kg at 185.5p and £1621 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown Farm, sold Holstein cross cows to top at 912kg, 175.5p and £1600 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Moscrop, Ryeclose, sold a Dairy Shorthorn heifer for 575kg at 233.5p and £1342 to Morgan Helliwell. On Monday 25th November, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep, after the weekend storms numbers, were , as expected back on the week and left buyers scrambling over a very high quality local show of sheep, the ewes really kicked this off selling to average pennies short of £155 and saw the ewe record broken with 8 ewes sold in 5 lots at £430 a head, all to Yorkshire Halal Meats, Ossett. Suffolks sold to £255 with Mules to £180, hill sheep to £180 for a Cheviot from West Stobswood, with horned ewes to £115 per head for two Swaledales from Church Farm.
2600 prime lambs sold to a massive trade with an overall average of 332.7ppkg overall and sqq of 336p leading the day’s trade were Beltex from Messrs Halliday, Crawthat who sold to £230 or 500ppkg with 44 from this home averaging £198.68 or 428.53 ppkg. Heavies continue to sell well to a top of £205 from Messrs Fisher, Lairdlaugh, Castle Douglas, and a run of 43 mainly first cross Texel and Suffolk, from Foley Brothers, Capheaton selling to a top of £191 to average £183.02. Again Borderway lead the way on the day and was well in advance of last week’s outlets, with many many more numbers required as we move into December to satisfy demand in the UKs most talked about sheep centre.
