KITTY TOPS FOR WITHERSLACK

113 Holstein heifers average £2172

The December Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale had a packed catalogue of 400 dairy cattle consigned from across the North of England and Scotland.  Buyers from 18 counites were recorded on the buyers list; in general the overall standard was somewhat lower than in previous months and this was reflected in the overall average.  Trade topped at £2900 with milking heifers averaging £2172, in calf heifers sold to a brisk trade with seven heifers selling to a top of £2200.

Agri-King sponsored the sale with the Inman family from Witherslack Farm near Grange Over Sands stealing the show.  They sold Witherslack Alcove Kitty for £2900, she was sired by Westcoast Alcove and bred from a VG89 dam sired by Champion.  They also sold Witherslack Applejax Mab for £2750.

Matthew Gemmell from Brownfield Farm in Dumfries sold 5 heifers and topped at £2850 for Brownfield Arena Isabella.  She was sired by Denovo Arena and was bred from a VG87 Mardi Gras dam.

Alan McCamley from Knockshiffnock Farm in Ayrshire, sold Downview Dalliance Sarah for £2800.  She was fresh a month and was giving 35kgs and bred from a Goodwhone dam with lactations over 12000kgs.

The Wilson family from Evening Farm near Thursby sold three cracking uddered heifers to average £2533 and topped at £2700 with Evening Rubico Honey. 

Ayrshires topped at £2600 for a fresh heifer sired by Brieryside Hail consigned by John Adamson from the Swaites Farm near Lanark.  She was giving 30kgs and was bred from a super Ayrshire dam that gave over 12500kgs as a six year old.  This special consignment had the joint highest average on the day at £2533.

British Friesians topped at £2600 for a fresh heifer from Mr Marrs from Croft Farm near Carlisle and Tony Williamson from High House ouseHFarm near Appleby sold a second lactation cow for £2500 with the overall average for British Friesian coming to £2260.

There was a functional group of late lactation cows from SRUC and the Cathers family from Stannock Farm near the Isle of Whithorn.  They topped at £2050 to average £1334.

A quality group of in calf Holstein heifers were forward from several top farms with the top price of £2200 achieved on seven occasions to average £1972 for 31 Holsteins.  There was a further 36 short-bred Holstein heifers that were due from May next year and they topped at £2000 twice to average £1600. 

A powerful group of 20 Pro Cross In-Calf heifers due in February and March were consigned by the Cathers family from Stannock Farm near the Isle of Whithorn.  They topped at £1350 to average £1122. 

A well-bred group of 48 Jersey cross Irish Friesian in-calf heifers with high EBI’s were consigned by the Archer family from Darlington.  They were due in February and early March to the Kiwi sire and sold to an average of £700.

The sale finished with a tremendous offering of bulling heifers consigned by several top herds that averaged almost £900.  They topped at £1100 twice for daughters of Rager Red consigned by the Harrington family from Birds Hill Farm near Dalston.
