PRIME CATTLE: Borderway primestock sale here for our customers every week, not just for Christmas. Once again, another tremendous entry of 72 prime steers and heifers forward seeing a far plainer offering throughout, but still plenty trade left in the tank with steers averaging £2158.60 and heifers equalling out at £1974.38. Topping the sale overall was a 770kg Limousin cross from Messrs McClelland, Knockshinnoch, Dumfries, selling to £2552.55, next best from the same home was a 797kg cross achieving £2546.42, the 20 Limousin cross steers forward averaged a staggering £2352.46. Aberdeen Angus crosses to £2257.43 for 711kg from Messrs West, Whin Bank, Whitehaven. OTM Charolais crosses from Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton, sold to £2175.60 for 784kg and a 673kg Simmental cross from Messrs Morton, Church Farm, Penrith, sold to £2136.78.

Top steer price per kilo came from a great run of cattle from Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas, peaking at 338.50p for a 685kg Limousin cross. Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie, sold the next best, a 744kg Limousin cross to 336.50p.
Heifers saw a day’s overall top of £2421.98 for a 751kg Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont, next best Angus was 723kg from Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas selling to £2281.07. Charolais sold to £2329.57 for 707kg from DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton, and a much lighter 608kg heifers sold to £1979.04 from Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport. Limousin cross heifers sold to £2270.26 for 689kg from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont and 663kg to £2250.89 from Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas.

Top overall pence per kilo of 351,50p went to 572kg Limousin cross for DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton, selling to Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby, sold next best at 347.50p for 595kg and Messrs Wilson, Bowscale, Maryport, sold a 508kg British Blue cross to 345.5p.

PRIME BULLS: A mixed show of 74 prime bulls forward at Borderway’s weekly sale whereby all classes met a flying trade throughout with no resistance in any way.  Topping the sale overall was M/s Watson, Bowsden Moor Farm, Berwick Upon Tweed with a 857kg pure bred Limousin achieving a grand £2909.52 this bull was also top overall price per kilo at 339.5ppk.  M/s DA Harrison, Hill Howe, Wigton took next highest price selling 772kgs to £2358.46.  M/s Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie sold 736kgs Simmentals to £2307.36 and £2305.75 for 802kgs. M/s Wilshaw, Oulton Hall, Wigton had a 729kg Blonde equate to £2300 and M/s Thompson, East Unthank, Haltwhistle sold a much lighter 687kg British Blue cross to £2194.97.

Second highest price per kilo of 334.5 went to a 5445kg Limousin cross of M/s Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton

Black & White bulls were very low in numbers this week and sold to £1631.07 for 619kg Fleckvieh from M/s Hewitt, Cardewlees, Carlisle. Holstein  females sold to £1511.97 for 606kgs from M/s Johnstone, Cote House, Carlisle. M/s Hewitts Fleckvieh was also top price per kilo at 263.50 and Holstein Friesians sold to 249.50 firstly for the above from Cote House Farm and secondly from M/s Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton selling 590kgs.

On Monday 9th December H&H held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which included the annual Christmas show , the show attracted a wonderful turnout of lambs with the task of judging being left in the capable hands of Mr Martin McIntrye, Hawes with the event being very generously sponsored by weekly supporters Yorkshire Halal Meat Ltd and Lancashire Direct Halal Meat Ltd along with Grange Quarries, Eric Hall Livestock Agent & GT Tyres  The Championship was claimed by an amazing pen of 4 Beltex lambs from Zoe Hall and Mark Batty Horsely Hall Farm Cottage, Hawick which sold at £580 to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston , the Reserve Championship was claimed by the 1st prize AOB lambs, which were Dutch Texels from M/s Story Woodhead Haltwhistle these sold at £420 to Yorkshire Halal Meat Ltd , Ossett. The single Champion and Reserve also came from M/s Story both selling at £500 each to Bowland Foods and Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd , all the show sheep were a cracking trade , this followed through to the weekly sale which saw 3324 head sell to an all in market average of 325p and sqq of 335p , all classes and weights of lambs were in high demand throughout and sold to 12 active buyers on behalf of 30 outlets, heavies regularly sold at £3.15 plus with a run of 394 heavies averaging 321p , regular standard weight lambs sold time and time again at 330p plus and best export lambs sailed beyond 380p with many breaking the 400p barrier, Mules sold to £162 and (325p) with horned lambs to 306p , 905 ewes sold to a sharper trade, to a top of £260 for Texels from M/s Kermode , IOM, numbers needed next week, Thankyou for the support !
