PRIME CATTLE: The year ended on a high as Borderway’s weekly Cattle Primestock sale came to an end for the year. 65 Prime steers and heifers came forward and sold to a superb trade from the word ‘go’. A day’s overall top went to the best female who was a 762kg Limousin cross from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth totalling up to £2541.27 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold a 791kg Limousin cross to £2495.61 to Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Crichton also sold the best Charolais cross 707kgs to £2301.29 selling to Pioneer Foods. Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie sold a dairy bred British Blue heifer to £2147.42 for 717kgs and Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan sold a similar 708kg to £2106 both purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Top overall pence per kilo of 341.5p went to a 541kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Jewitts Meats, Spennymoor. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot, Dumfries sold 660kg to 339.5p to A & D Meats.
Steers sold to a days top of £2520.07 for a 779kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe also sold 727kgs to £2395.47 to A & D Meats. British Blues to £2198.16 for 688kg from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle. Simmentals to £2155.53 for 755kg from Messrs Fox, St Johns Kirk, Biggar purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Top pence per kilo of 329.5p achieved twice. Firstly, by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton for 727kg and Messrs Story, Jackson Rigg, Longtown for 723kgs.

PRIME BULLS: A very mixed and poor offering of 77 Prime bulls forward selling to a flying trade for all classes. Top overall was a 959kg Limousin cross at £3121.55 from Messrs Shankland, East Raffles, Dumfries. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick sold 1000kgs to £3075. Charolais to £2752.99 for 851kgs from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries and Simmental crosses to £2269.68 for 784kgs from Messrs Fox, St Johns Kirk, Biggar.
Top pence per kilo of 341.50 went to the first animal to enter the ring an 802kg Limousin from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Wishaw equating to £2738.83 and others to 335.5p for 714kgs from Messrs Little, Guards, Wigton. Charolais to 323.5p from South Bowerhouses and a Dairy bred Britishs Blue from Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown, Carlisle sold to 315.5p for 583kg.
Dairy bulls were very well sold and topped at £1627.40 for a 632kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Wilson, Street House, Carlisle and a top pence per kilo of 257.5p for this same animal.

CAST COWS: A great show of 407 cast cows and stock bulls was forward for the last sale of the year at Borderway.
Messrs Studholme & Son, Nealhouse Farm, sold two outstanding cows for 1013kg 255.5p, £2588 for a Blue X and 927kg, 263.5p, £2442, for a Limousin x PURCHASED BY David Barker and Charles Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm, sold a run of Limousin cows topping at 892kg, 277.5p, £2044 purchased by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick twice. D A Harrison, Hill House Farm’s run of outstanding cows topped at 800kg, 289.5p, £2316 and 801kg, 287.5p and £2302, 697kg, 289.5p, £2017, purchased by David Barker, Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr.
Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, sold the top priced Charolais cow, selling for 904kg, 233.5p, £2110, to David Barker. Messrs Ogle, Wydaw Farm, sold a Simmental heifer for 543kg, 309.5p, £1680 to Alan Jarvis.
Pearsby Hall sold an Angus for 591kg, 287.5p, £1699, and a Simmental for 578kg, 287.5p, £1661, both purchased by David Barker.
Messrs Struthers, Thornyhills Farm, sold a Hereford for 657kg, 283.5p, £1862 to David Barker.
All classes of dairy cast cows were in great demand. Messrs Holliday, New Bampton Farm, sold the top priced Holstein X heifer for 794kg, 253.5p, £2012, to David Barker. Messrs Workman, Beeches, sold a run of Montbeliarde X cows, topping at 841kg, 233.5p, £1963, for a 4 year old cow bought by David Barker.
Messrs Johnston, Cote House Farm, sold a Holstein X heifer for 777kg, 245.5p, £1907 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Pattinson and Son, Walby Hall, sold a 5 ½ year old Holstein x cow for 916kg, 205.5p, £1882 to Steven Bows. Messrs Murray & Son, Conheath Farm, sold a run of Holstein X cows topping at 928kg 201.5p, £1869 to Charles Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Hyslop, Meinside, sold Holstein X heifers for 530kg, 251.5p, £1332 and 641kg, 247.5p, £1586, bought by Michael Helliwell and David Barker.
Howend Farms, sold a Norwegian Red heifer for 618kg, 245.5p and £1517 to Les Fell.

PRIME LAMBS : On Monday 16th December Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep, another packed sale yard this week was greeted with a trade full of festive cheer across all sections, the market average of 335p, sqq 345p towered above all outlets trading today and the trade had to be seen to be truly appreciated. Leading the lambs at £230 and 535p was a wonderful pen of Beltex lambs from Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries, which sold to Bowland Foods Ltd who purchased many of the top price per kilo lambs on the day, putting together a pen of great quality. Heavy lambs sold exceptionally well throughout for all types with Texels to £198 from Messrs Davidson , Mill View, Otterburn and Suffolks to £193 from Messrs Robley, Demense, Armathwaite, who sold 48 heavy Suffolk x Mules to average £184.83 closely followed by heavies from Messrs Harrison, Aldermanseat, Gretna who sold 36 to average £181.72 , ewes were a flier throughout with all classes dearer, particularly the lighter plainer ewes which look seriously well sold against the heavier fleshed sheep. Top today was an outstanding Beltex ewe from Messrs Little, The Guards, Wigton which sold at £340 to Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd.
