Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 29th March Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. Once again a good show of 360 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with 1529 prime sheep.

PRIME BULLS: The 82 prime bulls were an absolute flyer from start to finish for all shapes and sizes with many more required weekly.  Topping the overall price per head was Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith with their Limousin which achieved £2116.13 and was purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  British Blues sold to £1729.04 from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.  Top overall pence per kilo of 256.5ppk was paid to Messrs Thompson, Townfoot for their aforementioned bull.  Messrs Brown, Willows Farm, Workington sold their best to 255.5ppk purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith to 254.5ppk again purchased by Bowland Foods.

Black and whites seen the biggest lift on the day with a days overall top of £1324.55 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Johnston, Cote House, Carlisle, this was also top pence per kilo of 224.5ppk; next best was £1277.16 for a Holstein from Castlesteads Farms Ltd, Penrith purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Fleckviehs sold to 198.5ppk from Seymour Farms, Wigton and finally other Holstein Friesians to 196.5ppk from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie.  Please advise entries by call or text to the auctioneer Grant Anderson 07872 129274.

PRIME CATTLE: - A very small entry of only 30 prime steers and heifers were forward which was way short of requirements, this was mainly due to the year end.  Top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle at a grand total of £1797.08.  Messrs Wilson also sold another to the second top of £1758.13.  Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle sold their dearest run of 6 cattle to £1747.74 and to an average of 240ppk. Top pence per kilo steer of 244.5ppk was paid to Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle and was purchased again by Pioneer Foods.

Heifers numbers were also short of requirements and saw a very good trade throughout, with the days top of £1659.39 for Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse and was purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin.  This heifer was also top pence per kilo of 260.5ppk.  Messrs Story, Newbiggin also sold Limousin cross heifers to £1614.41 and Mr William Miller, High Aketon, Wigton topped at £1552.45 and a top pence per kilo of 254.5ppk purchased by Mathers Butchers. Messrs Miller’s run of heifers averaged a healthy 247ppk.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A good entry of 258 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to a keen ring side of buyers ensuring a great trade once again.  JTC Excavating sold the top priced British Blue cow for 912kg, 217.5p, £1983 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Malone, Pitcairn Farm sold a British Blue cow for 795kg, 247.5p, £1967 to Owain Llyr.

Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side cast cows topped at 772kg, 215.5p, £1663 for a Blonde bought by Owain Llyr, Messrs Webster, East Plenmeller run of cows topped at 773kg, 207.5p, £1603 for a British Blue X bought by Charles Kirkpatrick, Messrs Thompson, East Unthank sold a Limousin X cow for 765kg, 206.5p, £1579 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Meek, Eland Hall run of cows topped at 758kg, 204.5p, £1550 to Bill Howard for Jewitt Meats.  Mr Gary Bell also sold a Limousin X cow for 930kg, 164.5p, £1529 to Sean McGimpsey, Messrs Brannen, Scar Top run of cows topped at 816kg, 184.5p, £1502 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

All classes of dairy cast cows were on offer to again one of the dearest trades with 35 selling for more than £1000.  Messrs Irving, Meinbank Farm sold a Fleckvieh cow for 857kg, 161.5p, £1384 to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill run of Holstein X cows topped at 941kg, 145.5p, £1369 to Dovecote Park, Messrs Whitfield, Woodhouses sold a Holstein X cow for 863kg, 156.5p, £1350 also to Dovecote Park.

Messrs Armour, Milton Farm sold a Holstein X heifer for 757kg, 173.5p, £1313 to Alan Jarvis, Messrs Weightman, Highwood Nook run of cows topped at 867kg, 148.5p, £1287 to Dovecote Park, Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold a Holstein X cows for 727kg, 174.5p, £1268 and 692kg, 168.5p, £1166 both to Les Fell.  Messrs Story, Blackrigg sold a Holstein X heifer for 680kg, 184.5p, £1254 to Martin Grix; Messrs Coulthard, Chalkside run of Holstein X cows topped at 676kg, 185.5p, £1253 for a heifer bought by Les Fell.  Messrs Crichton & Son, Limekiln sold a Holstein X cow for 864kg, 143.5p, £1239 to Dovecote Park, Messrs Hall, Whitlawside sold a Friesian heifer for 564kg, 184.5p, £1040 to Les Fell, Seymour Farms sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 623kg, 175.5p, £1093 to Les Fell and Messrs Pattinson & Son, Walby Hall sold a Holstein X heifer for 656kg, 164.5p, £1079 also to Les Fell.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime sheep had a slightly reduced entry of 1529 head forward.

A good entry of well finished hoggs came forward this week, with only a few tail end types running through them. Handy weight sheep of all classes and breeds regularly sold beyond 300ppk, to give a fantastic SQQ average of 297ppk, well exceeding pre-sale predictions.

A small entry of spring lambs sold to £152 from Messrs Moffatt, West Shaftoe, Hexham.

The Anderson Brothers, Nether Stenries, Carrutherstown sold the top two lots of hoggs this week with Beltex cross Texel hoggs to £174 a head.

Top pence per kilo was 402.8ppk was paid for smart Export types from Messrs Skelton, New Hall, Dearham. Suffolks to £152 from Messrs Ramsay Dockray Hall, Wigton and to 306.5ppk from Bromfield Hall Farms, Wigton.

Hill hoggs sold to £144 for Cheviots from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown and to 294.2ppk for Blackies from Messrs JW Coulthard, Brisco Hill, Longtown.
