Kirkby Stephen Prime Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night when 2,643 sheep were forward consisting of 57 spring lambs, 2,317 prime hoggs and 269 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £177.50 were a pen of 42kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Robshaw, Tadcaster which were bought by Yorkshire Halal Meats.

A pen of seven 45kg hoggs sold for £176.50 also from this home and were bought by Lancashire Direct Halal.

Topping at 430p/kg were a pen of three 40kg Beltex cross hoggs which sold for £172 from R Skelton, Newhall Farm, Maryport.

Another pen of five 38kg Beltex cross hoggs sold to make £160.50 (422.4p/kg) also from Newhall Farm.

Messrs Skelton also sold a pen od twenty-two 43kg Texel cross hoggs to make £156.50 (364p/kg) selling to Yorkshire Halal Meats.

Mule hoggs topped at £148 for a pen from Messrs Graham, Brechin which were bought by A Atkinson.

A pen of ten 48kg clipped Mule hoggs sold for £140 (291.7p/kg) from Beck Hill Farm, Richmond and were bought by Scotbeef Ltd.

Suffolk cross hoggs sold to 310.9p/kg for a pen of twenty 46kg hoggs which made £143 form Beck Hill Farm, Richmond and were bought by Lancashire Direct Halal.

Another pen of thirteen 45kg Suffolk cross hoggs sold for £138.50 (307.8p/kg) from Newhall Farm bought by West Scottish Lamb.

Blackfaced hoggs sold to 301.1p/kg for a pen of thirty 45kg hoggs which made £135.50 from Messrs Addison, Greystone House, Kings Meaburn.

Several impressive large penful’s of Swaledale hoggs sold to top at 294.4p/kg for a pen of seventy-two 45kg hoggs which made £132.50 from Messrs Graham, Brechin, another pen of fifty-seven 44kg Swaledale hoggs sold for £129 (293.2p/kg) also from this home.

Some wonderful consignment of Hill Cheviots also topped at £146 for a pen of eleven 50kg hoggs from Messrs Skelton, Maryport. Hill Cheviots also topped at 305.7p/kg for a pen of sixteen 44kg hoggs which sold for £134.50, with another pen of 45kg Cheviots selling for £136.50 (303.3p/kg) from Riverside Farming.

Trade was the dearest seen so far this season with a SQQ average of 300.3p/kg and an overall sale average of 290.7p/kg being achieved which includes over 1000 Swaledale, Mule and hill bred hoggs within this.

Beltex cross hoggs averaged a whopping £155.33 and 3.60p/kg.

Mule hoggs averaged £131.11 for all weights sold.

480 Hill Cheviot hoggs forward sold to average £128.48 and 292.7p/kg.

Cast sheep topped at £160 for a Texel cross ewe from Messrs Walton, Goodlie Hill Farm, Great Asby which was bought by Pak Mecca Meats.

Rough fell ewes sold to £106.50 for a pen of nine ewes from Messrs Handley, Archers Hill, Sedbergh which also bought by Pak Mecca Meats.

Swaledale ewes sold to £90.50 for a pair from Messrs Hill, Whitewall, Great Asby.

Cast sheep numbers fell way short of buyers requirements, and many more could have been sold to extreme demand.

Many more prime hoggs and cast sheep of all classes will be wanted for next weeks sale on the 6^th April.
