Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 5th April Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A smaller show of 270 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with 2311 prime sheep were forward for the bank holiday Monday.

PRIME BULLS: A quieter day was had due to the bank holiday but every vendor forward was more than rewarded by their trade. A plainer offering of 54 bulls on offer and a real lack of shapey, heavier bulls. Top overall was a Simmental cross from Messrs Potter, Cardew House, Carlisle achieving £1525 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Limousin crosses sold to £1498 from Seymour Farms, Wigton purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Natives from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie sold to £1468.94 purchased by Jewitt Meats. It was Messrs Brown, Willows Farm, Workington that received the top price per kilo of 244.5p for a Limousin cross again purchased by Ralph Pearson. Dairy bred bulls were also fantastically easy to sell and peaked at £1411 for a Friesian from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Holstein Friesians also sold to £1395 from Messrs Armstrong, Randalinton, Carlisle again purchased by Bowland Foods. Messrs Bland also sold top pence per kilo of 214.5p for the aforementioned Friesian bull.

PRIME CATTLE: Bank Holiday tightens numbers once again but sees the trade soar through the roof. Top overall was a marvellous Limousin cross steer from Messrs Hewitson, Lords Close, Maryport who peaked at £1977.53. Messrs Jefferson, Abbey Cowper, Wigton sold one to £1931 and Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle to £1921 all purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 258.5p was also received by Messrs Hewitson, Lords Close for another Limousin cross. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton matched this same price with their Limousin cross. The sale of steers averaged £1782.30. Heifers likewise were lacking in numbers but received a marvellous trade throughout. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside, Lockerbie attaining £1591.25 and purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Top overall pence per kilo of 271.5p was paid to Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouses sold another to 254.5p purchased by WE Fairlie, Letham.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE:   A very pleasing entry of 207 cast cows were on offer to a keen ringside of buyers.  Messrs Hetherington, West Moor End sold a Limousin X cow for 712kg, 217.5p, £1548 to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor with a Limousin X heifer from the same home selling for 214.5p to Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs Kearton, Wyse Hill run of cows topped at 839kg, 174.5p, £1464 for a Limousin X and 689kg, 203.5p, £1402 for a British Blue X and British Blue X heifers from the same home selling for 215.5p bought by Michael Helliwell and Les Fell.  Messrs Shaw, Crookdyke sold Limousin X cows and heifers for 687kg, 212.5p, £1459 and 609kg, 219.5p, £1336 bought by Sean McGimpsey and Jewitt Meats.  Messrs Priestly, Cracrop run of Limousin X cows topped at 736kg, 193.5p, £1424; 712kg, 199.5p, £1420 and 770kg, 178.5p, £1374 bought by Michael Helliwell, Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr.  Messrs Bell, Winterhope sold a Simmental X cow for 214.5p to Charles Kirkpatrick.

A great demand for all classes of dairy cast cows on offer, Mr John Rogerson & Son, Wardpark sold a Fleckvieh cow for 966kg, 155.5p, £1502 to Dovecote Park, Messrs Glendinning, Bridge End sold the top priced Friesian cow for 849kg, 157.5p, £1337 to Dovecote Park, Messrs Edgar & Co, Whitecroft Mains run of cows topped at 909kg, 145.5p, £1322 for a Holstein X and 812kg, 148.5p, £1205 for a Fleckvieh and again both bought by Dovecote Park.  Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold a Holstein X cow for 857kg, 152.5p, £1306, Messrs Dalgleish, Bulls Head sold a Holstein X cow for 862kg, 147.5p, £1271, Messrs Mandale & Son, Lambfield run of cows topped at 796kg, 150.5p, £1197 for a Danish Red and Messrs Clark, Whins sold a Friesian cow for 696kg, 157.5p, £1096 all going to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Shaw, Crookdyke sold a Holstein X heifer for 625kg, 169.5p, £1059 and Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End sold a Holstein X cow for 726kg, 163.5p, £1187 both to Capper Farming.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 5th April 2021 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep, a much larger show of 2175 hoggs were met by a sensational demand leaving an overall average of 305ppk, SQQ 311ppk which translates to £135.67 per head. 

Topping the sale at £192 was a fabulous Beltex hogg from Messrs Little, The Guards, Wigton with another at £190; both selling to Steven Wilson Butcher, Corby Hill.  Top per kilo was 429.4ppk again paid for Beltex hoggs from PR & LR Hunter, Stoneraise, Wigton selling to Field Fresh Ltd, closely followed at 424.3ppk from Messrs Shepherd, Low House, Millom.  Messrs Shepherd sold the top price Suffolk hoggs at £167 with Messrs Fell, Harley Croft, Wigton selling to 317ppk.

Mule hoggs sold to £152 from John Fell Jnr, Stanger Hill, Wigton and to 300ppk from Messrs McKeown, Stranraer and Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown.  Hill hoggs to £152 for Blackies from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown and to 321.4p for Cheviots from Messrs McKeown, Stranraer.

CAST SHEEP:  On Monday 5th April 2021 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of cast ewes and rams where trade continues to grow from strength to strength for all classes with big ewes being far dearer on the week regularly selling for £130 plus.  Rams continue to soar selling to a top of £190 for a Texel from Messrs Donaldson, Hazel House who also sold 2 more Charollais rams at £170.  Ewes sold to a top of £166 for a Suffolk cross from Messrs Dixon, Westfield House; Swales topped at £86 from Messrs Bowman, Brampton Fell with all classes of horned ewes flying.  Mules sell with ease regularly at £100 plus topping at £113 from Messrs Milburn, Walby Grange.

A whole sale average of £115 where many more ewes could be sold with rams being dearer here than other local centres; please do not hesitate to get in touch.
