Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their opening show and sale of store cattle when a catalogued entry of 469 cattle were on offer.

Topping the sale at £2435 was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Atkinson, Abbey Park, Bleatarn, this same home also sold other Limousin steers to £2415, £2375, £2300, £2275 twice, £2255, £2245 and £2200 and also selling Limousin Heifers to £2155 twice, £2115 twice and £2005 twice. This consignment of 22 Limousin steers and heifers sold to average £2095.18.

The overall champion beast, which was judged by Mathew Brown of Bridlington was awarded to a nine month old British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Sedgley, Low Bank House, Barbon which sold for £2150 to Messrs Amos, Leicester.

The reserve overall championship was taken by the first placed steer a Limousin cross which sold for £2280 from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside which sold to Taylors Farm Shop, Ormskirk. This home also sold British Blue heifers to £2400 twice, £2280 and £2000 three times and Limousin steers also selling to £2215. This consignment of 8 steers and heifers sold to average £2196.88.

Messrs Anderson, Leyburn sold fifteen month old Limousin heifer to make £2300 with this home also selling an eleven month old British Blue heifers to make £1915.

Messrs Bell, Hill Top Farm, Keswick sold a fourteen month old Limousin cross heifer to make £2275. With a thirteen month old Limousin steer selling for £1965, with a ten month old Limousin heifers making £1775 and eleven month Limousin steers making £1735 also from this home.

Messrs Little, Row End Farm, Soulby sold sixteen month old British Blue cross heifer to make £2275.

Messrs Pickles, Far Gearstones, Chapel le Dale sold Limousin heifer to make £2265 with other Limousin heifers from this home making to £2200.

Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm, Shap sold sixteen month old Limousin heifers to make £2135 and Limousin cross steers to £2100 and £2055.

S Buckle, Bleathgill, Barras sold a British Blue cross steer to make £2175 with Messrs Buckle selling British Blue steers to make £2135 and £2000.

While temperatures outside where maybe sub-minus the trade for cattle in Kirkby Stephen was red hot with the dearest trade seen to date been achieved.

Heifers averaged an almighty £1676.19 (up £303.34 on the year)

Steers averaging £1603.82 (up £120.87 on the year).

40 cattle sold between £2000 and £2435.

Holstein steers sold to £1600 from Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, Souldby.

Messrs Owen, Sandwath farm sold a pair of Friesian steers to make £1500.
