PRIME BULLS: What a great start to kick off 2025 Primestock sales in Borderway with 105 Prime bulls and 74 Prime steers and heifers resulting in an outstanding trade from start to finish.
Topping the bulls at £3222.60 was a 1048kg Limousin from Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie with the next heaviest bull at 811kgs from Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow, Wigton achieving £3061.53 both purchased by A & D Meats. Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie sold top Simmental to £2545.95 for 789kgs and Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie sold 755kgs to £2449.98 selling to Bowland Foods, Preston and Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. British Blue crosses out of the Black and White cow came to £2285.95 for 698kgs from Messrs Workman, The Beeches, Carlisle and 671kgs from the same home coming to £2224.37. Charolais to £2236.80 for 737kgs from Messrs Jardine, The Yett. Top overall pence per kilo of 391.5p went to a 767kg Limousin cross from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria selling to A & D Meats. Messrs Watret, Maulscastle Farm, Annan sold 752kgs to 381.5p and Messrs Jardine, The Yett sold 717kgs to 377.5p.
Dairy bred bulls sold to a top of £2399.46 for an 812kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie. Friesians sold to £1876.18 for 746kgs from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown, and Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie sold 686kgs to £1807.61 both purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Montbelairdes to £1801.23 for 661kgs from Messrs Graham, Burncroft, Annan. Top pence per kilo overall was the Fleckvieh from The Whins at Lockerbie achieving 295.5p. Friesian to 263.5p from Messrs Graham, Hillhead for 686kg and Holsteins Friesians to 257.50 for 584kgs from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm, Penrith.

PRIME CATTLE: Borderway bursts into 2025 with an excellent show of 74 Prime steers and heifers forward with a booming trade to match.
The furthest travelled animal found it a worthy trip taking the top overall priced animal at £2635.88. Messrs Graham, Airthey Farm, Bridge of Allan, Stirling sold a 781kg Limousin to this outstanding amount.
Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont sold another flashy 717kg heifer to £2606.30, these cattle were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and A & D Meats. Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries bagged the top priced Charolais cross heifer at £2566.62 for 756kgs, Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria sold a Blonde cross to £2364.80 for 640kgs and a 647kg British Blue cross for £2293.62. Top pence per kilo heifer and overall top of 377.5p went to a 630kg Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Messrs Graham, Rose Castle, Carlisle sold 641kgs to 367.5p.
Steers were forward in fewer numbers than normal but sold fantastically well to a days top of £2567.95 for a 770 kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by A & D Meats. Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie sold 754kg to £2484.43 to Mr Eric Hall and Bothel Parks, Wigton also sold top priced Charolais cross to £2522.47 purchased by A & D Meats. Top pence per kilo of 355.5p went to a Limousin cross from weekly vendors Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton selling 677kgs to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. The same home also sold the next highest at 347.5p for 703kg to A & D Meats. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks sold top Charolais cross at 339.5p

PRIME LAMBS: On Monday 6th January 2025 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep, our valiant vendors , the 103 lucky ones who could make it on a snow laden morning with served with some new year cheer as every sheep in the market sold to levels beyond belief with the ewes setting the tone for the day posting a market average of a quite incredible £175.18 pen after pen sailed past £200 with a top of £320 for Beltex ewes from Messrs McGarva, Horse Close, Messrs Ingram, Logie Durno sent 280 ewes south and averaged a phenomenal £189 per head topping at £290 for a pen of 7 Texels with Suffolks to £252 and Chev mule types to £212 and 210 with countless over £200, mule ewes sold to £202 from Messrs Neill , Upper Nisbett, away from the headlines the lighter type ewes were simply incredible with plenty of these £160-180 with very few sheep available under £140 regardless of breed and finish. This trade carried on into the hoggs with a market average of 366p SQQ 370 towering once more at the top of the national league , the trade for all weights was incredible with a top of £230 for Texels from Messrs Fisher Lairdlaugh, Castle Douglas who also saw 500p for a further pen, following at £228 for Beltex from Messrs Scott, West Micklethwaite Wigton who also lead per kilo selling a pen of Dutch texels at 520p and Beltex at 518p, heavies sold incredibly with the over 52kg section averaging a jaw dropping 355p with Messrs Harrison, Alderman Seat leading the averages on the day selling 35 to level at £197.63 or 394.3p Suffolks sold to £208 from Lairdlaugh or 390p for Davie Moir , Fraserborough , Mules sold to £165 from Messrs Graham, Airthrey Kerse , Stirling and 370p from Messrs Hamilton, Kirkton of Crawford Abington , who also sold Blackies to £156 and 380p , with more buyers expected ringside again next week, if you haven’t already, the time is now to sell in the UKs most talked about sheep ring.
