Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 19th April Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A larger show of 380 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with 1620 prime and cast sheep were on offer.

PRIME BULLS:  A similar entry 73 prime bulls were forward with a slight easing on plainer bulls. The best quality still shone through with the day’s top of £1991.72 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth selling to J & E Medcalf Ltd, Brookwood Abattoir. Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, Dumfries sold another to £1863.75 purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold the top British Blue cross bull to £1888.55 and was purchased again by Ralph Pearson. This bull was also the top overall pence per kilo of 267.5ppk, followed by two at 248.5ppk from Cleughbrae Farm and West End Farm. Native Bulls sold to £1612.41 from Messrs Ridsdale, Yew Tree, Penrith for their Aberdeen Angus.

Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1428.35 for a Holstein Friesian form Messrs Story, Blackrigg, Longtown purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and Friesians to £1327.20 from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. This same vendor also sold the top pence per kilo of 197.5ppk for another. Messrs Little, Kirkbride, Wigton sold the top overall pence per kilo of 198.5ppk for a Norwegian Red and was purchased by Jewitt Meats.

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of only 32 prime steers and heifers forward whereby an exceptional trade was seen once again. Topping the sale at £1906.32 was a quality Limousin from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Wilson, Petteril Farm, Carlisle’s best sold to £1889 for another Limousin cross and Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold one at £1812.95. Top pence per kilo of 253.5p was paid to Hoddomtown for another Limousin cross. The sale of steers averaged a whopping £1770.51. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse sold top British Blue cross to 246.5ppk. Heifers saw a day’s high of £1809.34 and £1804.43 for outstanding Limousin cross heifers from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. A dairy bred British Blue cross from Castlesteads Farm, Penrith peaked at £1405.29 and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top overall pence per kilo of 275.5p was paid to Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm for their marvellous 607kgs Limousin cross purchased by R & JB Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle and Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton sold to 264.5p for another and was purchased by Ballard Butchers. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE:  A large entry of 282 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to a keen ring side of buyers ensuring all classes being as good as last week’s flying trade.

Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm sold an outstanding 60 month old Limousin cross cow for 791kg, 226.5ppk or £1791 to Jewitts. Messrs Campbell, Strawfrank Farm run of Limousin cows topped at 816kg, 216.5ppk or £1766 and to 790kg, 207.5ppk or £1639 both to Mr Kirkpatrick.

Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm sold a Limousin cow for 874kg, 180.5ppk or £1577 to Mr Michael Helliwell. Messrs Cleasby, Linden House sold a Limosuin cow for 813kg, 187.5ppk or £1524 again to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close sold a Limousin cross heifer to 640kg, 223.5ppk or £1430 to Michael Helliwell. Crowhall Farm run of cows peaked at 616kg, 214.5ppk or £1321 to Owain Llyr. Denis Cadzow & Co, Duncrahill Farm House run of cows topped at 674kg, 202.5ppk or £1364 to Roberts, Wales.

All classes of dairy cast cows were in great demand, with Messrs Dart & Son, Flothers sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 897kg, 153.5ppk or £1376 to Dovecote Park. Upper Barr run of Holstein cross cows topped at 892kg, 149.5ppk or £1333 also to Dovecote Park. Messrs Sherwen, Greenmoorside sold a Holstein cross cow for 855kg, 155.5ppk or £1329 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Watson, Howrigg arm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 794kg, 166.5ppk or £1322 to David Holmes. Connell Farm sold a Fleckvieh cross cow for 825kg, 157.5ppk or £1299 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Carlyle, Belaberry Rigg sold a Holstein Friesian cross cow for 868kg, 148.5ppk or £1288 to Les Fell. Castlesteads Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 723kg, 177.5ppk or £1283 to Les Fell. Messrs Dalgleish, Bulls Head Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 809kg, 156.5ppk or £1266 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Story, Blackrigg sold a Holstein cross heifer for 691kg, 182.5ppk or £1261 to Les Fell. Messrs Glendinning, Bridge End sold a Holstein cross cow for 797kg, 157.5ppk or £1255 to Les Fell.

Holstein cross heifers topped at 183.5ppk from Messrs Bell Torpenhow Hall, Friesian heifers to 179.5ppk from Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank.

CAST BULLS: A good show of 8 stock bulls were on offer with trade for all classes on fire. Messrs Dempster, Castlehill sol and outstanding Charolais stock bull for 1191kg, 194.5ppk or £2316 to Bowland Foods. Messrs Dickinson, High House sold a Limosuin stock bull for 1171kg, 157.5ppk or £1844 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill Farm sold a British Blue cross bull for 939kg, 194.5ppk or £1826 to Rob Medcalf. Messrs Copeland & Son, Kilfillan sold a British Friesian bull for 1092kg, 134.5ppk or £1468 to Picktocks.

SPRING LAMBS: 102 spring lambs came forward and were met with a ferocious demand. These topped at £202 a head for a cracking single Texel x from Messrs Park, Wetheral Shields, Carlisle which sold to Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill. Adam and Amy Bell claimed top spot per kilo with Texel lambs to 437.1p purchased by Mr Morgan Helliwell, the run of 25 from this home averaged 36.16kg and averaged a mind blowing £150.16 (415.27p). The 102 spring lambs levelled at £146.71 a head or 375ppk!

PRIME HOGGS: A mixed show of 1373 hoggs were good to sell for all shapes and sizes, weights and grades with well fleshed types achieving beyond 300p with ease levelling at 296p overall, 303.5p SQQ and £137.78 per head. Colin Hebson, Chapel Farm sold the top hoggs this week to £184 for a great heavy Texel selling to Mr R Skelton. Cochranes Nurseries sold the top hoggs per kilo at 391.2p for a pen of 3 Texel hoggs which sold to R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton. Top average for hoggs with £175 a head for a run of 12 from Messrs Bell, Mossband Hall, Longtown.

CAST SHEEP: Trade continues to fly high at the weekly sale of cast ewes and rams.  The sale topped at £170 for a cracking Texel ewe from Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft, Wigton.    Horned ewes topped at £100 for a pen of Swales from Messrs Moore, High Side.  Big framed ewes regularly sell £130+.  Many more ewes can be sold with ease on a regular basis with trade looking to continue to hold firm.
