PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of 75 Prime bulls forward at Borderway’s weekly sale.  Trade unbelievably went forward again with a days trade unwitnessed in the history of the Company.  Seven bulls sold over £3000 seeing a top overall of £3587.85 paid for a 971kg British Blue from Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains, Lanark.  The same vendor sold 905kg to £3506.88.  Limousins to £3326.44 for 941kgs from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick to Bowland Foods, Preston.  Others to £3083.05 for 830kg from Messrs Mulholland and 825kg from Messrs Sedgewick, Gallaber Farm, Carnforth to £3007.13.  Charolais sold to £3322.90 for 940kg from Messrs Clark, Blackhills, Carluke and Blondes to £3195.66 for 884kgs from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop, Penrith.  Simmentals to £2742.40 for 853kgs from Messrs Morton, Church Farm, Penrith and Aberdeen Angus to £2463.23 from Messrs MacTaggart, Dunjop, Castle Douglas for 914kg.

Top overall pence per kilo to 387.50 went to Messrs Comries 905kg British Blue.  Messrs Nimmo, Bogside sold best Limousins to 365.5p for 719kgs

Black and white dairy bulls sold extremely well to a days top of £1950 for a 660kg Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie.  Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle sold best Fleckvieh to £1878.86 for 649kgs.  Top pence per kilo of 295.5p went to Messrs Clark, Whins aforementioned Friesian and Messrs Grainger, Kiln Close, Wigton not far behind at 293.5p for 595kgs.

PRIME CATTLE: Another fantastic entry of 75 Prime steers and heifers forward at the number one Primestock ring in the north of England and South of Scotland.

Just when you think things cant get any dearer …. They just did.  An overall average of £2107.34 was achieved for dairy breds, Belted Galloway right through to the very best of the Continental suckler bred animals.  Topping the day was a 791kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas receiving £2637.98.  Messrs Wilson, Petteril Farm, Carlisle sold 760kgs and sold to £2595.40 both purchased by Mr Eric Hall, an 859kg Staberlizer from Messrs Allgood, Nunwich Hall, Hexham sold to £2443.86. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold the top British Blue cross to £2403.66 for 708kgs and Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle sold the best Charolais cross to £2353.63 for 714kgs purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Wainwright, Castle Farm, Carlisle sold a 521kg Belted Galloway to £1612.80.

Top pence per kilo of 367.5p went to a 666kg Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Heifers peaked at £2462.22 for a 721kg Limousin cross doing the double for Messrs Craik, Waterside Farm, Castle Douglas selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Craik also sold 679kgs to £2441.01 a first cross British Blue out the Holstein from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie sold to £2276 for 726kgs and Beef Shrothorns from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton sold to £2217.22 for 712kgs. Top overall pence per kilo of the day went to a 621kg Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Newhouse, Carlisle achieving 375.5ppk to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. The same vendors sold 645kgs to 369.5p and was purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle. Aberdeen Angus crosses sold to 357.5p and 351.5p for 586 and 602kgs from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne, Wigton.

CAST COWS: A large show of 371 cast cows and stock bulls forward with 14 selling for over £3 per kilo and 46 selling for £2.5 per kilo or more. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydkirk sold a British Blue cross cow for 687kg, 357.5p, £2456 purchased by Charles Anderson. Messrs Robertson & Co, Newton of Logierait, Pitlochry run of cows topped at 758kg, 357.5p, £2709 and 770kg, 349.5p, £2691, 909kg, 329.5p, £2995 for Limousin cross and a British Blue cross sold for 817kg, 313.5p, £2561 purchased by Owain Llyr and Charles Anderson x3. PRIME LAMBS : On Monday 13th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which attracted another fantastic entry of 4241 head. Another busy ringside of buyers were on hand to bid at all classes of sheep this week which were presented from vendors from and while averages were slightly back on last weeks sale, returns were well beyond other outlets and left all vendors delighted, best export lambs were a marvellous trade this week with the heavier lambs maybe slightly less than of recent weeks but still sold well in the £180 to £210 region , ewes of all breeds were a flier with Suffolk cross ewes averting £199.22 Texels to £300 and lighter hill type ewes to £140. 3148 Prime hoggs forward this week of all breeds ranged from 30kg blackies up to 69kg Cheviot miles with each and every one contributing to a fantastic market average of 351p sqq 357p A simply sensational 43kg Dutch lamb from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House grabbed the days spoils selling at £260 of 604.7ppkg to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston with 43 lots of sheep breaking the £4 per kilo barrier and 72 lots selling in excess of £180 per head. Mule type lambs sold to £220 for heavy Cheviot mules from JS Watson, Field Croft, Holmrook. Messrs Storey, Woodhead ,Hexham consigned 60 Dutch texel cross hoggs to sell to a top of £220 and averaged £191.30 or 439.43ppkg  for 43.5kg hoggs.

The 1000 ewes saw a top of £300for texels from Messrs Vance Bridgehouse , Whithorn who sold another pen of 4 at £290, Dutch spotted and Suffolks sold to £280 from Lochlad Farming, Lochmaben and Messrs Barclay , Harestone, Aberdeen, Messrs Tippetts, Shropshire sold a great run of heavy ewes, predominantly suffolk x mule types to a top of £243 to average £231, all classes required next week to satisfy a further expanding customer base.
