PRIME BULLS: A larger show of 73 Prime bulls were forward but still at least 30 short of requirements.  Trade like this today has never been seen before with overall averages of £2350.26 for a predominantly dairy bred show of bulls.  Twelve bulls sold over £3000 and four sold over £4 per kilo.  Top overall bull on the day was a 950kg Limousin for Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton achieving £3909.25 selling to Bowland Foods, Preston.   Messrs Shankland, East Raffles, Dumfries sold a cross bred to £3739.86 for 948kgs.  British Blues to £3355.58 for 852kgs from Messrs Hodge, Craighead, Biggar and to £2945 for 760kg from Messrs Morton, Grennan Farm, Thornhill.  Aberdeen Angus to £2612.22 for 887kgs from Messrs Somerville, Braehill, Dumfries.  Beef Shorthorn crosses to £2527.47 for 666kgs from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle and Simmental crosses to £2455.86 for 732kgs from Messrs Dodd, Tundergarth Mains, Lockerbie.  Top overall pence per kilo of 415.50 went to an 895kg Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton and also 885kgs to 413.50 both selling to Bowland Foods, Preston.

A new record has been set for a genuine Holstein Friesian weighing 697kgs selling to £2366.32 from Messrs Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat selling to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.   Montbelairdes to £2257.43 for 711kg from Messrs Workman, The Beeches, Carlisle.  Top overall pence per kilo of 354.5p went to a 592kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle and second highest was 339.50 from Messrs Armour, Milton Farms.  Anyone sitting with Prime bulls ready to sell are urged to bring some to Borderway and have a go as this trade is unmatched anywhere else.

PRIME CATTLE: A much smaller show of 41 prime steers and heifers forward which was miles short of buyers requirement as this beef trade clicks up yet another gear. The steers forward averaged £2641.06 and heifers levelling out at £2200.24. Charolais steers achieved top price per head of the day at £2988.70 for 836kg from Messrs Wilson, Kirkmabreck Farm, Newton Stewart. Next best of the same breed was 808kgs to £2815.88 from the same vendor. Limousin crosses sold to £2854.18 for 812kg from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton, sold 765kg to £2849.63 and Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria, sold the best British Blue cross at 694kgs to £2619.85. Top price per kilo steer was a 695kg Limousin cross from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton, receiving 387.50p selling to Bowland Foods, Preston.

Heifers sold to £2558.34 for a 732kg Charolais cross from Messrs Wilson, Kirkmabreck, Newton Stewart, purchased by Mr Eric Hall, a 647kg Simmental sold to £2416.55 from Messrs Harrington, Hesket Hill, Carlisle and best Limousin crosses to £2368.16 for 608kg from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle, and purchased by R & J P Mulholland Butchers shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.

Top pence per kilo overall came from Messrs Watson, Sanders Close, Brampton, selling 554kg to 391.50p. Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill 608kg heifer previously mentioned sold for 389.50p.

Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm, sold the top priced Limousin cow at 11-year-old for 880kg, 327.5kg, £2882 to Michael Helliwell. PRIME HOGGS : On Monday 3rd Feb 2025 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep which saw an increased entry of 4230 sheep forward, with both the cast and prime rings seeing a pleasing increase in numbers, and indeed a large increase in returns. 944 ewes and rams were forward this week selling to a brisk trade throughout with the plain end of the ewes which are masked by the headline acts providing sensational returns for vendors. Beltex and Texel ewes both hit £300 being consigned by Messrs Smith-Jackson, Lipwood, Hexham and Messrs Beaty, Newton Field, Wigton in fact every lowland and continental  breed forward posted top prices in excess of £200 with Horned ewes to £140 for Blackies from Ballyninch Farm.

The hoggs found several gears on the week with all weights and grades easily being 15-20p dearer, with this being reflected in our overall average of 350p and sqq of 360p with best export types being few and far between. Heavy hoggs from Messrs Qua, Drumrow topped both the Suffolk and Texel sections , Beltex hoggs sold to £218 or 507p from Messrs Bewley, Mid Farm, Wigton and to 508p from Rod Scott, West Micklethwaite, Wigton, with the leading pence per kilo this week being 520p for 40kg lambs from Messrs Sparke, Little Swinburne, Hexham who also sold another pen at 500p. Also joining the 500p club was Messrs Gibson, Thornton Towers, Hexham who sold 42kg lambs at £216 or 514.3p The headlines didn’t stop at the continental and Suffolk breeds with John Smith-Jackson selling a pen of 56kg Mules to £182 with Danny McGregor, Longrigg selling light mules to 355.6p. Horned lambs sold to £165 for Blackies from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown, who sold plenty pens of weight  at 340-345p per kilo. Top price per kilo was 347.5p for 40kg lambs from Messrs Coulthard,  Brisco Hill, Longtown.
