Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 26th April Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A good show of 450 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with 1336 prime and cast sheep were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 75 prime bulls were forward with trade seen to reach to that of last week, resulting in a great trade throughout.  Topping the bulls at £2179.35 was a Limousin from Messrs Goldie, Townfoot Farm, Dumfries purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. Simmentals to £1822.77 from weekly vendors Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Waterbeck, again purchased by Brookwood Abattoir. Messrs Goldies Limousin was also top pence per kilo at 248.5ppk.

Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1382.15 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Wilson, South View, Penrith, purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Montbelairdes sold to £1353.77 from Seymour Farm, Wigton and Friesians to £1339.88 from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton. Top pence per kilo of 215.5ppk was paid to Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton for a Friesian purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Dickinson sold another to 213.5ppk, purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Many more quality bulls carrying weight are required on a weekly basis

PRIME CATTLE: An increased entry of 46 prime steers and heifers forward with one of the best trades seen so far including one outstanding animal reaching the magical 300ppk. The top overall price per head animal came from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton achieving £1900.61 for a 741kg Limousin cross steer. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold the top 742kg British Blue cross at £1888.39 both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe also sold the top pence per kilo steer at 258.5p. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle sold another at 257.5p. Heifers topped at £1779.33 for a fantastic Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold another to £1607.19 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Top overall price per kilo of 300ppk was attained by Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton with what was one of the best Limousin heifers seen for a long time, this beautiful 507kg Limousin x was purchased by Frasers Butchers, Hanover Street, Stranraer. Messrs Miller’s run of 4 heifers averaged an outstanding 274.5p. Many more quality heifers and steers are required on a weekly basis to fulfil buyers demand. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE:  An increased entry of 340 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer on Monday with all classes of beef cows being in great demand. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm sold a 10-year-old Limousin cow for 792kg at 214.5p totalling £1698 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall’s run of Limousin cows topped at 777kg at 216.5p totalling £1682 bought by Jewitts Meats. Messrs Wilson, Hardrigg Hall sold a Limousin cow for 951kg at 174.5p totalling £1659 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Bradley & Son, Marina House sold a Partenais cow for 708kg at 224.5p totalling £1589 and 6345kg at 208.5p totalling £1321 bought by Owain Llyr and Jewitts Meats. Messrs Weatherson, Edges Green sold a British Blue x cow for 689kg at 203.5p totalling £1402 to Owain Llyr. Messrs MacDonald, Ladyhousesteads sold a Limousin cow for 648kg at 213.5p totalling £1383 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House sold the top priced Simmental cow for 831kg at 162.5p totalling £1350 and a Simmental heifer for 663kg at 199.5p totalling £1322 bought by Alan Jarvis and Les Fell.

A large show of black and white cast cows was on offer with all classes in great demand. Messrs Vevers, High Plains sold a Holstein x cow for 937kg at 139.5p totalling £1307 to Les Fell. Buckabank Farms sold a Holstein x heifer for 679kg at 183.5p totalling £1245 to Brian Capper. Brownrigg Hall Farms’ run of Holstein x cows topped at 794kg at 154.5p totalling £1226 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Weightman, Highwood Nook sold a Holstein x heifer for 668kg at 182.5p totalling £1219 to Les Fell. Messrs Armstrong, Randalinton Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 886kg at 137.5p totalling £1218 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Evening Hill Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 182.5p to Les Fell. Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold a Norwegian Red heifer for 182.5p to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Messenger, The Howes sold a Swedish Red heifer for 179.5p to David Holmes and a Holstein x heifer for 178.5p to Les Fell. CAST BULLS: Only 4 stock bulls were on offer with trade being very good. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold a Simmental bull for 1208kg, 164.5ppk or £1987 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Oliver, Whitehouse Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 1048kg, 174.5ppk or £1828 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Walton & sons, Greyside Farm sold a Limousin to 1037kg, 162.5ppk or £1685 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: Another good entry of 1336 prime sheep forward at Borderway on Monday. All classes were again a pleasure to sell leaving vendors elated with returns. An overall average of 300ppk (SQQ 305ppk) being achieved. 

SPRING LAMBS: The spring lamb section saw 145 head forward and new targets set with a top call of £232 paid for an amazing Beltex lamb consigned by Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston which also topped per kilo at 539.5ppk selling to Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill. Messrs Musgrave sold others to £225 (511.4p) and £220 (500p) to Mulhollands Butchers, Great Orton to average an incredible £199.71 or 482.07ppk for 7.

PRIME HOGGS: Hoggs sold to £186 for a fabulous heavy Texel hogg from JAW Wilshaw, Oulton Hall, Wigton who averaged £173.81 for their run of 16. Top per kilo was 400p paid for Texel hoggs from Messrs Donaldson, Hazel House, Huby, Yorkshire. Messrs Hewetson, Scales Hall, Caithwaite sold a run of heavy hoggs to a top of £178 to average £169.38. Hill bred hoggs sold to £145 for Cheviots and Blackfaced hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Dalston who sold a run of 349 to average 300.5p or £143.66 per head.

CAST SHEEP: A good entry of cast ewes and rams were forward, with trade yet again being dearer on the week. All classes of ewes are in high demand. Topping today at £175 was a Texel ram from Messrs Reid, Bengall.

Ewes peaked at £160 for a Texel cross ewe from Messrs Harrison, Lesson Hall. Mules sold to £115 for a pen of 6 from Messrs Bell, New House Farm. Swaledale to £86 for 2 from Messrs McGregor, Dirrops.

Cast ewes and rams continue to hold extremely well with increased interest for the next few weeks. With many selling to £100+.
