PRIME BULLS: A small show of only 67 Prime bulls forward, well short of buyers requirements once again.  21 bulls old over 4.00ppk and 15 over £3000, trade was unexpectedly dearer on the week.

A day’s overall top of £3984 for a 960kg Limousin from Messrs Marston, Easegill Head, Kirkby Stephen and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Best British Blue came from Messrs Kirkbride, Flimby Hall, Maryport selling to £3745 for 909kgs.  Top pence per kilo of 422p went to a 785kg Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick and Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith sold next best at 420p for 679kgs.

Dairy bred bulls sold to £2220.20 for a 653kg Holstein Friesians from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton and £2165.80 for 637kgs from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle.  These two bulls were also joint top pence per kilo at 340p

PRIME CATTLE: A fantastic entry of 93 Prime steers and heifers forward at the ever-growing Borderway weekly Primestock sale as more and more new vendors jump aboard the thundering steam train.  Taking the days top overall honours was 725kg Limousin cross from D A Harrison, Hill House, Wigton achieving a grand £2972.50.  The same farm also sold 756kg to £2933.28 and Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold the next best two at £2894.78 for 713kgs and £2881,52 for 724kgs.  20 Cattle sold at £400 per kilo or over and a day’s top overall was a 541kg Limousin from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton at 440 ppk. Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Lanarkshire match this price with a 619kg Limousin.

Steers saw a days top of £2895 for a 750kg Charolais cross from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel, Wigton sold top Limousin cross to £2880.52 for 713kgs and Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton sold best British Blue to £2876.58 for 761kgs.  Top pence per kilo of 418 went to a 638kg Limousin cross from Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, Carlisle.

PRIME HOGGS : On Monday 24th February Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which attracted a massive entry of 5389 head. All categories saw a pleasing jump on the week this despite quality and finish on the whole being lesser on the whole. 1227 ewes forward this week sold to average £161 per head, these all sold to extreme rates with medium and light weight ewes a serious trade altogether, top of the day was £380 for a pair of pure texels from O & B Morgan, Herefordshire. 4162 hoggs sold this week with a very commercial show on the whole, with all sheep sharper in particular the 43-46kilo hoggs which looked very well sold, however the trade of the day belonged to Messrs Stobart and Bland, Howbeck lodge, Hesket New Market who sold a run of Texel x Herdwick hoggs which averaged £139.31 per head for 38.55kg. Top of the day was £240 paid for heavy Beltex hoggs from Miller Farms Aberdeenshire who’s run of Beltex hoggs averaged £215.78 Top per kilo was 547.6p for exceptional Beltex export hoggs from Messrs Wharton The Snade who made a return after a lengthy absence from Borderways prime ring , Messrs Wharton’s run of 45kg Hoggs averaged £198.76 Or 442.36ppkg, Messrs Robson, South Farm, Hexham sold a great run of heavy Suffolk x hoggs to average £199.37 many more required next week in the UKs most talked about prime and cast sheep market.
