On Monday 3rd May Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A smaller show of cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and prime and cast sheep were on offer.
PRIME BULLS: A very good entry of 73 prime bulls were forward, resulting in a slight easing on trade overall. Despite this top overall was a superb Limosuin from Messrs Dent, Beamwham, Hexham, attaining £2101.41 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Athey, High Lovelady Shields, Alston sold another to £2038.44 again purchased by Bowland Foods. Simmental crosses sold to £1620.50 from Messrs Buchan, Overton of Knaven, Peterhead. Top pence per kilo of 243.5ppk was paid for a Limousin from Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith and the same price achieved by Messrs Dent, Beamwham, Hexham purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford, and Bowland Foods.
Dairy bred bulls sold to £1187 for Holstein Friesian for Messrs Story, Blackrigg, Longtown and a top pence per kilo of 194.5ppk for a British Friesian from Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith, both purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE: A very good entry of 44 prime steers and heifers were forward, whereby trade would be slightly easier on the week, but on the whole a marvellous trade once again. Top overall was a Limosuin cross steer form weekly vendors Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton achieving £1824.10. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold to £1820.95 and Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie to £1807.12, all of the above were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues to £1767 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle, and to £1729.14 from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Top pence per kilo of 249.5ppk was also achieved by Messrs Bowe, Bothel with one of their three entries.
Heifers seen a top of £1665.99 for an outstanding Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle. This heifer was also top overall pence per kilo of 260ppk and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle sold the second top to £1611.77, purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Airey, The Close, Carlisle sold the second top price per kilo of 353.5ppk purchased by Blackbrow Abattoir and Messrs Sisson, Kelbarrow, Penrith sold another to 252.5ppk and was purchased by King Street Butchers. Messrs Story, Newbiggin achieved the same price and was again purchased by Blackbrow Abattoir.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A good show of 206 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to a keen ringside of buyers ensuring a sharper trade.
Mr George Nelson, Reddings sold the top priced Limousin cow for 794kg, 193.5ppk or £1536 purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Harrison, Sceugh Farm sold a Limosuin cross cow for 906kg, 159.5ppk or £1445 to Les Fell. Mr George Brough, Old Rectory Farm sold a 73month old Limousin cow for 766kg, 211.5ppk or £1431 purchased by Mr Michael Helliwell. Crowhall Farms run of cows topped at 896kg, 155.5ppk or £1393 for a Shorthorn purchased by Mr Steven Bowes.
All classes of dairy cows were in great demand, with Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House selling a Montbelairde cross heifer for 750kg, 192.5ppk or £1443 and to 726kg, 186.5ppk or £1375 both to Capper Farming. Messrs Story, Blackrigg sold the top priced Holstein cross heifer for 710kg, 185.5ppk or £1317 to Mr Alan Jarvis. Messrs Irving, Brunt Hill sold a Holstein cross heifer for 702kg, 182.5ppk or £1281 to Les Fell. Messrs Brough, Buckabank Farm sold a Holstein cross to 898kg, 139.5ppk or £1252 to Les Fell. Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End sold a Holstein cross cow for 863kg, 139.5ppk or £1203 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Blencogo House Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 576kg, 183.5ppk or £1052 to Les Fell. Messrs Vevers, High Plains sold a Holstein cross heifer for 650kg, 183.5ppk or £1192 to Capper Farming.

CAST BULLS: Six stock bulls were on offer and what a trade. Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm sold one of the best Limousin stock bull seen in the ring for some time, which sold to 1154kg, 185.5ppk or £2140 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Shepherd & Son, Low House Farm, Millom sold an Outstanding British Blue bull for 1020kg, 203.5ppk or £2075 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Robertson, Newton of Logierait sold a great British Blue to 1094kg, 188.5ppk or £2062 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME SHEEP: Despite the Bank Holiday, another good entry of 1482 sheep came forward. Lambs were met with a great trade from start to finish with all weights and grades in high demand, the 153 lambs forward produced all in average od £143.47 per head. Topping the section at £188 was a fantastic single Texel lamb from Messrs Mallinson, The Hill, Burgh By Sands which sold to Steven Wilson, Butchers, Corby Hill. Top pence per kilo at £4 was a pair of Texel lambs from Mr Josh Merrell, The Green, Irthington, selling to Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale.
Another good entry of 1141 hoggs saw a very mixed offering, with plenty of life in the hogg job yet, averaging £137.54. A fantastic single Texel hogg of ME & JJ Fell, Stanger Hill topped both per kilo and per head at £180 and 360ppk to Morgan Helliwell.
