Holstein heifers average £2682

The March Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale attracted quality dairy cattle from across Scotland and the North of England from many of the region’s leading dairy farms. Trade topped at £4,000 with forty-seven cows and heifers selling for £3000 or more; Holstein heifers in milk averaged £2682.  

Agri-King sponsored the sale with the top price being consigned by the Blackwood family from Lesmahagow.  This impressive Jersey cow recently calved her second and sold for £4,000.  Her dam sold for 5,500gns in the Grahams Gold Cup sale in 2016 and went on to be a successful show cow for the Laird family, third dam in this pedigree was the All Canadian winner Rapid Bay Whistler Rumour EX96.   

The trade of the day went to the Moffat family from Gretna who sold seven heifers to average £3107 and topped at £3400 on four occasions.  These powerful framed heifers were all giving loads of milk and sired by high PLI sires. 

Also selling for £3,400 was Errolston Yamaska Rolls who was consigned by the Davidson family who farm near Gretna.  This perfectly structured heifer was sired by Westcoast Yamaska and bred from a milky dam.  The Errolston herd sold four milking heifers to average £3200.

The Shanks family from Queenscairn Farm near Kelso sold 20 British Friesian heifers from their high yielding organic herd to average almost £2642 and topped at £3400 for Queenscairn Patriot Rosette 2.  She was a recently calved heifer sired by Bradish Patriot Red and was giving 30kgs and was bred from a dam that gave over 11,000kgs as a three year old. 

John Adamson from Swaites Farm near Lanark topped the Ayrshire trade with Swaites Bracken who sold for £2550. 

Some quality in-calf heifers were consigned by Edward Wilson from Petteril Hill Farm and they topped at £2550 for a high PLI heifer sired by Marcello, she was due to sexed Herbstreit in April.  This fine group of in-calf heifers averaged £2500.
