Borderway Special March Spring Suckled Calf Show & Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Saturday 8th March 2025 Harrison and Hetherington held their annual March special show and sale of continental cross store cattle, this event was kindly and generously sponsored by Tithebarn, Trustford and AW Jenkinson Forestry products, on Friday night during the pre sale show, complimentary Steak pies were well received and kindly supplied by B&T Kitson Ltd, Hutton Rudby.

The show attracted over 100 entrants across the classes, with the unenviable task of judging what was described as the strongest turn out of calves evert seen at this event was placed in the masterful hands of renown showman Blair Duffton, Aberdeenshire who’s professionalism and knowledge shone through during his time in the centre of the ring, with calves travelling from all corners of the UK. It was eventually two local calves that rose to the top, Blair’s Champion came from class 1B in the form of a pure bred Limousin Heifer consigned by great supporters of this event Messrs Hardisty, How Hall, Ennerdale, sired by Hightown Ron out of a Uptonley Livingthedream sired cow. This stunning red heifer entered the ring first on Saturday morning and sold at £10,000 with Mr Duffton backing his judgement and purchasing the animal.

Overall Champion - £10,000

Standing in Reserve was David Jarman, Brow Top, Branthwaite with the winner of class 1C again with a Limousin cross heifer, this time she was sired by the famous Trueman Idol and out of a cow which was purchased by David after he judged at our Middleton in Teesdale Mart where she stood as his Champion from JC White, Rigg Farm , this beautiful black heifer went on to sell for £6000 to an undisclosed purchaser.

Reserve Champion - £6000

A further two heifers broke into the five figure bracket , firstly the sale leader , the first prize British Blue heifer shown by Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Hesket New Market, this heifer has already been successfully shown in the autumn and caused great interest pre sale, she was a hybrid heifer being sired by Solway View Pogba and was purchased at foot of her pedigree Limousin dam in Borderway last June from Messrs Renton, High Laws, Morpeth, the interest in her led her to breaking the centre record for a commercial animal when she sold at £16,000 to Gordon Cameron, Newton Cottage, Argyll who is a regular buyer of the top commercial heifers and pedigree bulls across the UK.

Also breaking the mark at £11,000 was another Limousin cross heifer this time brought out by a master of the show calf art, John Smith-Jackson, Lipwood , Hexham named Black Pearl this heifer had already won Stars of the Future and North East Live in the autumn, she is sired by homebred bull Hightown Jacko, she found a new home with Ian Snape, Redditch and will be undoubtably one to watch this coming show season.

The trade for show potential animals was amazing from minute go with the prize winning heifers averaging £5153.04 and the bullocks £2795 or £4222.23 overall with 13 cattle selling over £5000. The Bullock Champion was consigned by Messrs Robertson, Newton of Logierait, who triumphed with a Limousin cross bullock sired by Cappleside Soloman, and out of a Blue cross heifer sired by the Robertson’s noted stock bull Warehams Mickey, he lead the bullock prices at £4200 and sold to master of the show scene Wilson Peters, Monzie, Crieff.

Standing in reserve was another Limousin sired animal this time by another well know sire Huntershall Nutcracker again Mr Duffton backed his judgement when securing this bullock for £3200.

Outwith the show an entry of 719 cattle were presented for sale , a packed ringside was on hand to make this a record breaking sale in terms of averages with the exhibits being 10-12m of age at the end of the days trading a UK record average of £2219.03 was achieved being £516.86 up on what was the best trade anywhere seen last march with heifers up £607.58 at £2374.16 and bullocks up £431.88 at £2072.49, no fewer than 273 of these yearling crossed the £2000 mark, just a truly incredible sale and a truly incredible day for vendors and the UK commercial cattle industry.
