PRIME BULLS: New heights reached yet again in the Borderway bull ring, never have we ever seen a trade like today, endless bulls selling to £3000 club and today for the first time we have broken the £4000 barrier to see 1061kg to £4053.02, this was for a 34 month old British Blue from Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor Farm, Berwick Upon Tweed selling to Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Illingworth, Howgillside, Lockerbie sold best Limousin to £3636.36 for 819kg.  Top overall pence per kilo of 450 went to a 781kg Limousin from Messrs Lucas, 154 Seven Mile Straight, Northern Ireland.  Two bulls sold to 444ppk both from Messrs Illingworth, Lockerbie also two at 440pph both from Messrs Taylor, Heatheryhall, Lanarkshire.  Dairy bred bulls sold to a new record of £2786.40 for an 810kg Dairy bred Shorthorn from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham and also to a new record for a Black and White Holstein Friesian selling to £2721.36 for 782kg from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie with a top overall and yet again another record price per kilo of 382p for a 578kg Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE – Borderways Prime steers and heifers sees yet another lift on the week with 12 selling in excess of £3000 to a new record of £3426.62 for an 812kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs McClelland, Knockshinnoch, Dumfries not far behind was Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton with a 775kg Limousin cross achieving £3410.  Best British Blue cross came from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle selling 770kgs to £3311 and a 739kg Simmental cross from Arkleby Hall, Wigton to £3059.46.  Best pence per kilo steer came from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle at 448pph for 721kgs equating to £3230.08.  Next best two both came from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton receiving 444 and 440ppk

Heifers sold to £3196.84 for a 698kg Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, Workington and also selling 700 kgs to £3045 was the same good home.  Messrs Bowe, Mechi, Wigton dipped their toes to Borderway and were well rewarded selling the second top overall pence per kilo heifer at 450p for a 629kg Limousin cross equating to £2830.50 but their top per head was a 689kg Limousin cross selling to £2948.92.  Taking the top overall pence per kilo was Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill selling 698kg to 458ppk to Bowland Foods

CAST COWS: A smaller show of 186 Cast cows and stock bulls was forward with trade being sharper for all classes.

Messrs McClelland & Son, Knockshinoch sold the top priced Limousin x cow for 963kg, 329.5p £3173 to Michael Helliwell.  Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House sold a Maine Anjou cow for 824kg, 345.5p £2846 to Morgan Helliwell.  Messrs Gill, Newlands Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 741kg 357.5 £2649 also to Morgan Helliwell.  Messrs Potts, Chapel House sold the top priced Simmental cow for 817kg, 321.5p £2626 to Michael Helliwell.

Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside sold a Limousin heifer from 633kg, 399.5p £2528 to Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs Kearton, Wysehill run of Limousin x cows topped at 547kg, 385.5p £2108 for a Limousin x and 539kg, 369.5p £1991 for a Blonde bought by Morgan Helliwell and Alan Jarvis.

PRIME HOGGS : On Monday 24th March 2025 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which saw a fantastic entry of 5304 head forward. 1158 prime cast sheep kicked the day off with a bang, averaging an incredible £185.31, all classes sold to unbelievable rates for horned ewes selling to £154 to pure texel ewes selling at £420 all classes were simply sizzling , 358 ewes or 31% of the sale sold in excess of £200 with only 33 or 2.8% of the sale failing to make £100, truly incredible figure. Top of the day as said was a pure texel ewe from Paul Leonard, Pettigo selling to Yorkshire Halal Meats.  4183 prime sheep penned again this week, quantity  is easily handled with 12 buyers ringside acting on behalf of 27 outlets an overall average of 345p saw a slight lift on the week on what would be a very commercial show, with an SQQ of 365p, heavy lambs not the disaster seen the end of last week, with plenty buyers willing to take numbers, and light to export weight sheep of all breeds sold exceptionally well, Messrs Fisher, Lairdlaugh again lead the way per lead and per kilo selling Beltex at £230 and 547.6p with heavies selling at £210 for a marvellous pen of texels from Stanley Gregg Hillsborough , heavies sold to 408.5 pence with super heavies at 363 both consigned by Messrs Roper, Frizington who also sold light lambs to 486.5p in a wonderful consignment , super heavies(52kg plus) averaged 312p which is anywhere from 18-30p better than any other outlets with similar sheep in any quantity. The 32-45kilo bracket showing a great offering with plenty takers for straight commercial lambs willing to do business at 380-410p, more needed next week to satisfy demand
