Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday evening when 3,356 sheep were forward consisting of 10 spring lambs, 3079 prime hoggs and 267 Cast Sheep. 

Topping the sale at £232 where two joint sellers first for a 50kg Beltex cross hogg from Messrs Mason, East Farm, Malton.

With this price also being achieved for a pair of 68kg Texel hoggs from Messrs Raine, Stanhope Gate Farm, Barnard Castle, who also sold a pair of 66kg Texel hoggs to make £220.

Topping at 584.6p/kg where a pen of fifteen 39kg hoggs which made £228 from Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York with this home also selling a pen of sixteen 40kg to make £228 (570p/kg) a pen of eighteen 43kg at £223.50 and a pen of twenty one 40kg at £221 (552.5p/kg) a pen of fifteen 42kg at £220 (523.8p/kg) and a pen of twenty two 38kg at £216.50 (569.7p/kg), a pen of nine 45kg at £221 and a pen of ten 44kg at £220.

The consignment of 225 hoggs from Boscar Flats sold to average 42.6kg £213.32 and 500p/kg.

Messrs Skelton, Newhall Farm, Maryport sold a pen of 42kg to make £221 (526.2p/kg).

Messrs Mason, East Farm, Malton sold a pen of seven  51kg hoggs to make £220 with a pen of twenty six 41kg making £216 (526.8p/kg) from this home.

Messrs Simpson, Highscale Farm, Wigglesworth sold a pen of twelve 38kg hoggs to make £219 (576.3p/kg) with another pen of eighteen 37kg hoggs making £194.50 (525.7p/kg) with a pen of fourteen 35kg making £178 from this home.

Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill Farm, Workington sold a pen of 39kg to make £211 (541p/kg).

Messrs Hill & Wright, Mill Farm, Doncaster sold a pen of seven 43kg to make £219 and another pen of seven 42kg at £217.

Suffolk cross hoggs sold to £195 for a pen of twenty four 65kg hoggs from Messrs Turnbull, Boghall, Fife with this home also selling a pen of twelve 65kg Suffolks at £191, seventeen 65kg at £190 twenty three 65kg at £185.50 a pen of fifteen 58kg at £184 and another pen of eighteen 58kg Suffolk cross hoggs to £183.

Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York sold a pen of eleven 62kg Suffolk cross hoggs to make £186, with this home also selling a pen of fourteen 63kg hill hoggs to make £186.

Messrs Kiernan, Vale Farm, Preston sold 55kg Hill Cheviots to make £171 with another pen of ten 52kg  making £162, a pen of fourteen 49kg at £157, a pen of twenty two 45kg Hill Cheviots at £155.50 (346p/kg) and another pen of twenty four 45kg at £155 (344.4p/kg) a pen of thirty six 45kg at £154.50 (343.3p/kg) and a pen of thirty three 43kg Hill Cheviots at £148 (345.2p/kg).

The consignment of 256 Hill Cheviots from this home sold to average 44kg £150.84 (343p/kg).

Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, Soulby topped the Hill Cheviots at 407.9p/kg for a pen of five 38kg which sold for £155.

Messrs Armstrong, Crossfell House, Penrith sold a pen of 43kg Hill Cheviots to make £151 (351.2p/kg).

Mule hoggs topped at £171.50 for a pen of twenty 61kg hoggs from Messrs Wills, Fawcett Park Farm, Dufton.

Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York sold a pen of ten 64kg Mules to make £168.50.

Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, topped the mules at 327p/kg for a pen of 49kg which sold for £160.

Kirkby Stephen prime sheep ring does it once again bucking the national trend with a trade much stronger than anywhere else so far this week for all classes and weights with good meated handy weights being in extreme demand as reported throughout the country but the heavy sheep selling to a massive premium here at Kirkby Stephen with reports of some being £15-£20 dearer than trades so far this week!

An unbelievable SQQ average of 391.04p/kg and an overall sale average of 352p/kg and a whopping £166.51 for 3079 hoggs which includes over 800 horned and mule hoggs.

620 Beltex cross hoggs sold to average a fantastic 42kg £202.10 (481p/kg).

12 pens and 119 hoggs sold between £220-£232

Spring Lambs

Judging of our Easter Spring Lamb Show and sale was carried out by Mr D Morland, Tebay who awarded the Champion rosette to a 46kg Texel cross from Messrs Slee, Street House, Kirkby Thore which sold to £230 (500p/kg) and was purchased by Mr Alam or Lancashire Direct Halal Meat Ltd.

Messrs Shaw, Valley Drive, Bolton sold a 44kg Badgerface lamb to make £198 (450p/kg).
