On Monday 10th May Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A great entry 475 of cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and 1569 prime and cast sheep were on offer.
PRIME BULLS: An increased entry of 96 prime bulls forward with a good trade achieved throughout, all be it easier on previous weeks. Top overall came from the furthest travelled vendors Messrs Callion, Bolfornought Farm Stirling selling their Limousin to £1979 purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Messrs Wilson, Bankdale, Carlisle sold another to £1880 and Messrs Telfer, Newton High House, Hexham sold one at £1812. Blonde cattle sold to £1724 from Messrs Wilshaw, Oulton Hall, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Simmentals sold to £1667 from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Top overall pence per kilo of 261.5p was paid to Messrs Telfer, Newton High House for their Limousin purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Dairy bred bulls were easily sold achieving a top of £1360 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Graves, Old Town, Carlisle this bull was also top price per kilo of 201.5p purchased by Jewitt Meats Spennymoor. PRIME CATTLE: A much larger entry of 64 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly sale. Trade was buoyant throughout and some fantastic returns were achieved. Top overall was an outstanding British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby receiving £1850 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Limousin’s sold to £1674 for a quality animal from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan and was purchased by Border Meats, Lockerbie. Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth sold another to £1657 purchased by WE Fairlie, Leitham. Charolais sold to £1652 from Messrs Bell, Hallbankgate, Brampton purchased by Messrs Fell. Top pence per kilo and overall top was a Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton achieving 286.5p and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Little sold another to 275.5p which was purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. Messrs Dent’s aforementioned heifer peaked at 265.5ppk. Prime steers peaked at £1833 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold one to £1823 both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith also joined the £1800’s club attaining £1800 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Light Galloway steers sold to £1305 from Messrs Telfer, Newton High House, Hexham purchased by WE Fairlie. Top pernce per kilo steers were a Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks at 255.5p and another from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Aplleby to 254.5p and Messrs Wilson, Petterill Hill Farm, Carlisle to 253.5p. Dairy bred cattle sold were and were seen to peak at £1516 for a Holstein Friesian steer from Messrs Smithston, Skelcies Hall, Appleby the same vendor also sold top Holstein Friesian heifer to £1331 both purchased by Messrs Fell, Settle. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A great show of 318 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to a keen ringside of buyers ensuring a flying trade for all classes and 10 cows selling for over 200p per kilo. Messrs Armstrong, Crossfell House’s run of outstanding cows topped at 899kg at 207.5p totalling £1865 for a British Blue cow and 762kg at 233.5p totalling £1779 for a Limousin x purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Messrs Harryman, Keskadale Farm’s run of well finished cows topped at 716kg at 233.5p totalling £1600 bought by Owain Llyr and 564kg at 219.5p totalling £1237 to Micheal Helliwell. Messrs Bell, Woodhall Farm sold two outstanding cows for 806kg at 197.5p totalling £1591 for a Limousin x and 846kg at 184.5p totalling £1560 for a Blue x bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm sold a Blue x cow for 653kg at 234.5p totalling £1531 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House’s run of Simmental cows topped at 723kg at 209.5p totalling £1514 to Les Fell. Messrs Coulthard, Brisco Hall’s run of cows topped at 644kg at 207.5p totalling £1336 for a Beef Shorthorn to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Nichol, Lawston Farm sold the top price Aberdeen Angus cow for 668kg at 199.5p totalling £1332 to Michael Helliwell.
All classes of dairy cast cows were in great demand. Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End sold the top priced Friesian cow for 749kg at 184.5p totalling £1381 to David Holmes. Messrs Workman, Beeches Farm sold Montbeliarde x cows for 701kg at 195.5p totalling £1370 and 838kg at 147.5p totalling £1236 bought by Brian Capper and Les Fell. Messrs Pattinson & Son, Walby Hall sold a Holstein x heifer for 683kg at 187.35p totalling £1280 to Brian Capper. Messrs Johnstone, Westray Farm sold a Montbeliarde x cow for 854kg at 149.5p totalling £1276 to Steven Bowes. The Cowhill Trust, Muirside Farm sold the top priced Ayrshire cow for 884kg at 143.5kg at £1268 to Les Fell. Messrs Bowe, Chalk Lodge’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 883kg at 138.5p totalling £1222 to Brian Capper.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime sheep attracted a pleasing entry of 1569 head.
SPRING LAMBS: A larger show of 311 prime lambs forward with some top quality on show. The sale peaked at £190 for a real showstopper from regular consignors Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston which sold to Mr M Helliwell, Rochdale, this lamb also led the price per kilo at 431.8p. Liam Wannop, School Farm, Wigton followed closely behind at 428.9p for a cracker which sold to Mr R Skelton, Dearham. An overall average per head of £142.60 was achieved.

PRIME HOGGS: Another good turnout of 1070 hoggs this week saw a very mixed offering, all classes saw a lift on the week to average £137.99 for all weights, grades and types. Heavy hoggs led the way topping at £182 for Texels from Messrs Telford, Eden, Carlisle with another from Messrs Hewitson, Scales Hall, Penrith to £178(x2) to average £171.73. Hoggs sold to 357.1ppk for a fantastic run of Beltex from Paul Gardner, Glebelands, Brampton.

CAST SHEEP: The weekly sale of cast ewes and rams saw trade continuing to hold up well. Tups were in serious demand, selling with ease and topping at £195 for a Texel tup from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands. Ewes sold to a top of £132 for two Texels from Liam Wannop, School Farm. Suffolks sold to a top of £128 from Bradley McManus. A shortage on numbers making sure trade continues to fly.
