Montbeliarde Breed Record Set by the Smallrigg Herd

The dispersal of the Smallrigg Montbeliarde herd took place at Borderway on 23rd April with buyers recorded from 17 counties from Abreedeen in the north to Cornwall in the south.  Trade topped at 4,000gns with the overall average for milkers coming to £2915.

The Smallrigg herd was owned and managed by the Newbould family who have farmed at Small Rigg Farm close to the village of Lochmaben in Dumfries & Galloway for the past thirty years.  Originally the Small Rigg herd was a high yielding Holstein herd, approximately ten years ago the best Montbeliarde genetics were used resulting in this impressive herd.  They were averaging 35kgs with a rolling herd average of 10103kgs and managed in a robotic milking system.

Topping the sale at 4,000gns and setting a new breed record was a special second lactation cow sired by Ilax, she had produced over 10000kgs in her heifer lactation and was producing 62kgs.

There were several attractive Ilax daughters selling with one being the Prize winning cow for combined Butterfat & Protein in Scotland & Northen England with a heifer lactation of almost 15000kgs in 305 days.  She sold in her second lactation for 3,700gns

Milking cows averaged £2698 with another second lactation daughter of Ilax selling for 3,600gns.

Odyno is the Number 2 Montbeliarde bull in the charts with an Index of 158 ISU and it was one of his daughters that attracted some brisk bidding selling for 3,700gns. She was freshly calved in her second and was giving 51kgs.

Milking heifers averaged £3351 and topped at 3,800gns for a super fancy daughter of Ilax, she had calved in October and was due again in September to Roctavio sexed, her heifer calf by Savino sold for 1250gns.

The best uddered heifer in the sale sold for 3,700gns and was sired by Odyno, she had calved in November and due again in September to Roctavio sexed.

There was an outstanding group of in calf heifers on offer that averaged £3068 and they topped at 3,600gns for a daughter of Upsall.  She was due in August to the Angus.
