Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday Evening when 2634 sheep were on offer consisting of 215 spring lambs, 2003 prime hoggs and 416 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £190 were a pen of five 59kg Texel cross hoggs from Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York.

This home also sold a pen of sixteen 46kg hoggs to make £180, with a pen of fifteen 52kg Texel cross hoggs to make £182, and a pen of eight 57kg Texel cross hoggs at £181 and a pen of 58kg Suffolk cross hoggs to make £180.

Messrs Wills, Fawcett Park Farm sold a pen of 37kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £1546 (421.6p/kg).

Suffolk cross hoggs sold to £181 from Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm, Penrith.

Hill Cheviot hoggs topped at £161.50 for a pen of eleven from Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York.

Messrs Skelton, Newhall Farm, Maryport sold a pen of thirty one 45kg Hill Cheviots to make £153 (340p/kg) with this home also selling a pen of twenty three 52kg Hill Cheviots to make £158.50 (304.8p/kg)

Blackfaced hoggs sold to £152 for a pen of thirty nine 56kg hoggs from Messrs Skelton, Newhall Farm.

Swaledale hoggs topped at £129 (274.5p/kg) for a pen of 47kg from Messrs Wood, Middle Ridge Farm.

Spring Lambs

Spring lambs topped at £198 for a 49kg Texel cross lamb from Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, Soulby which was bought by Steadman’s Butchers, Kirkby Stephen.

Topping at 438.5p/kg were a pen of six 39kg Beltex cross lambs which made £171 from Messrs Beadle, Scaife House, Darlington.

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside sold a pair of 48kg Texel cross lambs to make £187 selling to Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

Suffolk cross lambs sold to £163.50 for a pen of eight 47kg from Messrs Sayer, Town End Farm, Penrith.

This home also sold 40kg Blue Texel cross lambs to make £170 (425p/kg).

Messrs Slee, Street House, Kirkby Thore sold a pen of seven 38kg Texel cross lambs to make £150 (394.7p/kg).

Six different breeds of spring lambs were forward with increased buyer demand for all types resulting in a SQQ average of 370p/kg and £155.70 being achieved.

Cast Sheep

Cast Sheep topped at £300 for a Beltex cross ewe from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside, with this home also selling Texel cross ewes to £264.

Texel cross ewes topped at £268 from Messrs Brass, Bridge End Farm, Soulby.

Charolais cross ewes sold to £258 from Messrs Deighton, Orchard Farm, Bleatarn.

Cast Rams topped at £215 from Messrs Birbeck, High Stennerskeugh, Ravenstonedale.

Beltex Rams sold to £206 for a pen of three from Messrs Little, Row End Farm, Soulby.

All classes of cast sheep were in demand and many more numbers can be sold well here at Kirkby Stephen.
