Borderway Prime Cattle Sale

PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 93 Prime bulls forward at Borderway’s weekly Primestock sale.  Trade would still be very strong for very best shaped and fleshed bulls with plainer more leaner types harder to cash on the week.  The top two bulls came from Messrs Smith, North Boig, Ayrshire with a 921kg Limousin selling to £3794.52 to A & D Meats and a Charolais weighing 1031kgs selling to £3629.12 to David Holmes.  Next best overall was a 710kg Limousin from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton selling at £3095.60.

A days top pence per kilo of 436pph went to Messrs Ridleys 710kg Limousin.  Messrs Jardine, Yett Farm, Lockerbie sold closely behind at 439pph for 667 kgs.

Black and whites sold to £2453.22 for a 684kg Montbelairde from Messrs Grainger, Kiln Close, Wigton, £2293.20 for a 637kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan and Holsteins to £2233.60 for 698kgs from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith.  Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill sold top pence per kilo of 368p for a 606kg Fleckvieh.  Montbelairde to 360p for 684kg from Kiln Close and Friesians to 328p from 522kg from Messrs Preston, Wed Holme House, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE:  An excellent show of 84 Prime steers and heifers forward with all classes a pinch sharper on the week, noticeably in the best quality animals.  Topping the sale overall was an outstanding heifer weighing 734kg from Messrs Richardson, Low Bank End, Appleby achieving £3303 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  The same home also sold next best at £3104.64 or 693kgs this one sold to R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.  Another heifer into the £3000 Club was a 772kgs from TS Farming, Riggheads, Dumfries selling to Mr Eric Hall.

Top overall pence per kilo of the day went to Messrs Richardson, top priced heifer at 450ppk with their 693kg selling to 448p.  Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton best was a 654kg Limousin selling to 446p to Steven Wilson, Butcher Shops, Corby Hill and Brampton.

Steers sold to a top of £3164.76 for an 894kg Limousin cross from Messrs Nelson, Rosgill Head, Penrith with TS Farming, Dumfries sold 841kg to £3111.70.  Top price per kilo steer was a 646kg Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle at 440ppk to Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Park, Wigton sold best British Blue cross to 422p for 698kg selling to A & D Meats.
