Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday Evening when 3006 sheep were on offer consisting of 200 spring lambs, 2373 prime hoggs and 433 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £200 was a 73kg Texel cross hogg from Messrs Watson, Whygill Head.

Suffolk cross hoggs sold to £190 for a pair from Messrs Kennedy, Roman Vale, Long Marton.

Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall Farm, Penrith sold a pen of eight Suffolk cross hoggs to make £185, with this home also selling Texel cross hoggs to £180, a pen of eleven at £178 and a pen of twelve to make £172.

Good meated pens of handy weighted hoggs were a strong trade being way dearer than what had been seen so far on the week.

Messrs Kiernan, Vale Farm, Preston sold a pen of forty two 37kg Hill Cheviots to make £131.50 and 355.4p/kg with another pen of fourty two 38kg Hill Cheviots making £134 (352.6p/kg).

This home also sold a pen of seventeen 41kg Blackfaced hoggs to make £132 (322p/kg).

Hill Cheviot hoggs also sold to £155 for two pens of thirty three and twenty  seven 57kg hoggs from Messrs Ratcliffe, Whitchurch with a pen of twenty six 55kg Hill Cheviots making £150.

And SQQ average of 330.4p/kg with 1441 hoggs scaling 52kg and above!

Spring Lambs

Spring lambs topped at £187 for a 54kg Suffolk cross lambs from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside which sold to Eric Hall, with this home also selling a pen of 50kg Texel lambs to make £175.

Ben Hayllar, Helbeck Grange, Brough sold a 48kg Texel cross lamb to make £184.

Messrs Deighton, Orchard Farm, Bleatarn topped at 390.7p/kg for 43kg Texel cross lambs which made £168.

Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, Soulby sold a pen of 44kg Texel cross lambs to make £170 (386.4p/kg).

Messrs Richardson, Etherley House, Darlington sold a pen of nine 44kg Suffolk cross lambs to make £164 (372.7p/kg) with another pen of five 41kg Suffolk cross lambs making £155.50 (379.3p/kg) from this home.

Messrs Ewin, Eden Flatt, Warcop sold a pen of seven 42kg Texel cross Mule lambs to make £156.50 (372.6p/kg).

All classes of spring lambs where a sharper trade with more buyers week on week looking to make more of a switch to sourcing lambs.

An SQQ average of 355.1p/kg and an overall average of 352.1p/kg and £152.33 was achieved.

Cast Sheep

Cast sheep topped at £295 for a Texel ewe from Messrs Brannen, Scar Top, Penrith with this home also topping the Suffolk ewes at £212.

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm sold Texel cross ewes to £255.

Messrs Simpson, Highscale Farm, Wigglesworth sold a pen of ten Beltex cross ewes to make £252, with another pen of eight making £248.

The consignment of twenty four Beltex cross ewes from this home sold to average £235.67.

Mule ewes sold to £195 from Messrs Tarn, Toby Hill Farm, Barnard Castle.

Messrs Sayer, Town End Farm, Hackthorpe sold a pen of twelve mule ewes to make £190.

Swaledale ewes sold to £140 from East Park Farm, Barnard Castle.

Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold a pen of six Swaledale ewes to make £137.

Cast Rams topped at £295 for a Suffolk from Messrs Kennedy, Roman Vale.

Messrs Watson, Whygill Head sold Texel Rams to £260, with the four Texel Rams from this home averaging £250.
