Cast Ewes and Prime Hoggs

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 26th May 2025 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep, another pleasing entry of sheep were forward this week with 1125 ewes 2000 hoggs and 720 lambs penned, all classes would see a firmer market on the week with sheep of all breeds weights shapes and sizes forward. Ewes were a fantastic trade from the off, these topped at £350 for a fantastic Texel ewe from James Crichton Loughrigg Egremont with Suffolks, Blue Texels and Charollais ewes all seeing tops of £250 with pen after pen breaking £200.

A larger show of 720 lambs as they start to come forward saw more outlets operating and a sharp trade throughout, M/s Trafford Bassenthwaite led the way at £230 for 44kg Beltex lambs with their run of 18 averaging £196.22. James Crichton was at it again in the lambs selling 3 pens at £225 with his run of 43kg lambs averaging a whopping £216.82 with his best pen leading the pence per kilo at 548.8p.

2000 hoggs with every breed you’ve ever seen and a lot of light tail end types forward , a sharper trade was witnessed to a top of £184 for 61kg texel hoggs from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, George Gate , Cockermouth sold a great run of hoggs to average £175 , best export types found a great return being few and far between, topping this was John Fell Stanger Hill who sold a great run to a top of 521p for Dutch Texels , more require next week as the festival orders really ramp up.
