Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday Evening when 4,553 sheep were on offer consisting of 501 spring lambs, 3265 prime hoggs and 787 cast sheep.

Topping the hoggs at £252 and 547.8p/kg a 46kg Beltex cross from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill Farm, Workington.

Texel cross hoggs sold to £245 for a 56kg from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside.

JoJo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York sold a pen of six 63kg hoggs to make £192, with Texel hoggs making £197, a pen of eleven 63kg Texel cross hoggs at £184, another pen of eleven 62kg at £181 and a pen of sixteen 67kg Suffolk cross hoggs making £185 from this home.

Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York sold a pen of twenty two 60kg Suffolk cross hoggs to make £174.

Hill Cheviots sold to £168 for a pen of twenty two 62kg from Messrs Ratcliffe, Whixall Hall, Shropshire.

With a pen of twenty five 55kg Hill Cheviots making £161 (293p/kg) and a pen of twenty 56kg at £162.50 (290p/kg).

Mule hoggs sold to £165 for 61kg from Messrs Deighton, Orchard Farm, Bleatarn.

Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm sold a pen of twenty one 58kg Mule hoggs to make £163 (281p/kg).

Blackfaced hoggs sold to £163 for 62kg from Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York with another pen of 55kg making £155 (281.8p/kg) from this home.

Little Park Farm, Scarborough sold a pen of twelve 55kg Blackfaced hoggs to make £161 (292.7p/kg).

Swaledale hoggs sold to £134 and 279.2p/kg for a pen of thirty four 48kg from Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm.

Once again Kirkby Stephen leads the way in the Prime Sheep trade with all classes and weights bouncing back up in trade and where much dearer than has been seen for a while.

An SQQ average of 310.6p/kg and an overall average of 286.9p/kg and a brilliant £150.16 being achieved which was said to be some £30 a head dearer than some so far this week.

Sixteen active buyers where operating around the ring firmly securing Kirkby Stephen as one of if not the most competitive prime Sheep rings in the country for all classes of sheep!

Suffolk ewes sold to £240 for a pair from Messrs Hodgson, Chapel House, Glassonby.

Lleyn ewes sold to £192 for a pen of fifteen from Messrs Chippendale, Wharton Hall, Kirkby Stephen.

Charollais cross ewes sold to £210 for a pen of five from Messrs Richardson, Etherley House, Darlington.

Mule ewes sold to £188 for a pen of ten from Messrs Scott, Brogden Farm, Danby Wiske.

Rough Fell ewes sold to £150 from Messrs Dunning, Raisgill Hall, Tebay.

Swaledale ewes sold to £134 for a pen of six from Messrs White, Rigg Farm, Barnard Castle.
