Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night when 2,816 sheep were forward consisting of 280 spring lambs, 1851 prime hoggs and 685 cast sheep.

Topping the prime hoggs at £182 were 68kg Texel cross hoggs from Messrs Hewetson, Scales Hall, Penrith which were bought by A Atkinson.

Spring lambs topped at £170 twice for two 44kg Texel cross lambs from Messrs Atkinson, Waitby Farm, Waitby which were both bought by J Birkbeck on behalf of Dowdings Butchers, Appleby and Steadmans Butchers, Kirkby Stephen.

Lambs also topped at 421.1p/kg for 38kg Beltex cross lambs which sold for £160 from Messrs Timm, West Farm, Pickering on his first time selling lambs in Kirkby Stephen and which were bought by West Scottish Lamb.

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside sold 40kg Texel cross lambs to make £167.50 (418.8p/kg.)

Messrs Ball, Darlington sold a pen of 47kg Texel cross lambs to make £167.50.

Good meated well bred lambs 38-43kg were in strongest demand with extra buyers present wanting numbers of spring lambs now here at Kirkby Stephen.

Texel cross hoggs also sold to £180 for 55kg hoggs from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill Farm, Workington.

Beltex cross hoggs sold to £177 for a pen from Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill, Penrith.

Some great consignment of well bred heavy hoggs were forward, with Messrs Slater, Macclesfield selling a pen of fifteen 55kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £170.

The run of 41 prime hoggs from Whiteley Hey Farm sold to average £164.27.

Messrs Deeming, Rugby made the journey to Kirkby Stephen and sold a wonderful consignment of 290 good meated Suffolk cross Mule hoggs to make top at £177 for a pen of 25, and the whole run of 290 good meated Suffolk cross Mule hoggs to top at £177 for a pen of 25, and the whole run of 290 Suffolk cross hoggs from this home selling to average £170.20.

Good meated heavy hoggs were still in very strong demand and more could have been easily sold to great advantage.

410 Suffolk cross hoggs forward in total sold to average a whopping £161.34.

Cast ewes topped at £170 for a pair of Texel cross ewes consigned by first time vendor Messrs Eardley, Cheshire.

Beltex cross ewes sold to make £150 for a pen of five from Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield.
