Hawksland Dairy Dispersal Sale

The dispersal of the Hawksland Holstein Friesian herd took place at Borderway on 11^th June with buyers recorded from 7 counties. Trade topped at 4,000gns with the overall average for milkers coming to £2261.

The Hawksland herd was owned and managed by the King family who have farmed at Hawksland Farm close to the town of Lesmahagow in Lanarkshire for the past few generations.  Willy King had decided to retire from dairy farming with no successor to take on the milking apron.  The cows were a blend of the best of the Holstein and British Friesian breeds with impressive frames, legs and feet and the quality of udder across the herd was to an exceptional level.  

Topping the sale at 4,000gns was a special heifer in milk sired by Jeanjo Alex, fresh in February and giving almost 30kg a day. After some brisk bidding she was secured by Messrs Gatherer from Cumnock.

Milking heifers averaged £2687 with another Jeanjo Alex daughter selling for 3,100gns to the same home.

At 2,900gns was the top price cow in milk, a fresh second calver by FB 786 Skywalker Stark daughter, also purchased by Messrs Gatherer.

In-Calf heifers were up to 2,900gns for an August 2023-born heifer due in July to Bomaz Getaway. She was secured by Messrs Whitfield, Silloth, Wigton.

Bulling and Heifer Calves sold to 1500gns with a February 2024-born ABS Sassafras daughter selling to Messrs Eilbeck, Aspatria, Wigton. It was another Sassafras daughter, born in June 2024 that sold to 1500gns to Messrs Haddow, Lesmahagow, Lanark.
