High Health Beef Breeding Cattle

A first of its kind sale was held in Borderway Mart on Friday whereby a good entry of 150 head of high health beef breeding cattle were forward. The sale was a resounding success throughout and it kicked off with a consignment of Simmental cows with calves at foot from Messrs Wood, Popes Farm, Preston attaining a top of £2800 and an average of £2068 for 10 sold. Messrs Johnstone, West Wharmley, Hexham offered a further 10 Limousin cross heifers with calves and averaged £2816 with a day’s top of £3200.

Bulling heifers were also a huge success for all best quality animals. Top price came from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan selling their 23-month-old British Blue cross attaining £2350, the same vendors also sold second top price of £2300 for another 14-month-old crossbred. Limousins peaked at £2200 from Gordon Wilson, Bankdale Farm, Carlisle and £2000 for another from Messrs Bell, Hilltop, Keswick. Simmentals and crosses were the main breed of the day and trade definitely did not disappoint with two year old heifers peaking at £1800 no less than six times for Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie, the consignment of 21 heifers from this home averaged a pleasing £1621.05.
