Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 17th May Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A good entry of 405 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and 1600 prime and cast sheep were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A very small entry of only 58 prime bulls forward saw an increased trade on the week for all classes.  Top overall was a British Blue from Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains, Lanark achieving £2053.97 and was purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.  Charolais sold to £1826.83 from Messrs Stott, Shaw Head, Longtown purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and Limousins to £1631.34 from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.

Top pence per kilo was attained by Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith selling their Limousin to 244.5p with Messrs Rome, Niven Hill just behind this at 243.5p.

Dairy bred bulls to £1235.64 for a Holstein Friesian from Johnston Partnership, Cote House, Carlisle and purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick; the same animal was also top pence per kilo of 210.5p.  More are required on a weekly basis, p lease advise entries by call or text to the auctioneer Grant Anderson 07872 129274.

PRIME CATTLE: Once again an outstanding show of 67 prime steers and heifers on show seeing an increase on trade on the week.  Top overall was a 755kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton receiving £1906.38, this was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle; Messrs Bowe sold another 700kgs Limousin cross to £1809.50.  British Blue crosses from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold to £1744.20 and Charolais crosses to £1545.41 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Top pence per kilo of 258.5p was received by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks for the aforementioned Limousin cross.

Heifers forward in remarkable quality seeing a day’s top of £1797.80 for a 712kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold their top at 751kgs to £1723.55 and was purchased by Border Meats, Lockerbie and Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle sold their top two priced heifers to £1715.18 and £1694 and were purchased by Steven Wilson Butcher, Corby Hill.  Light 592kgs Charolais crosses from Messrs Jarman, Brow Top, Workington peaked at £1429.68 and was purchased by Maurice Wharton, Blackbrow, Wigton.  Top overall pence per kilo of 271.5p was paid to Messrs Norman, Little Orton by Steven Wilson Butchers.  British Blue crosses from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton to 245.5p and purchased by W & E Fairlie, Letham.  Please advise entries by call or text to the auctioneer Grant Anderson 07872 129274.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A great entry of 285 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with a plainer show coming forward however trade for all classes was flying.  DA Harrison run of great cows topped at 773kg, 231.5p, £1789; 809kg, 218.5p, £1767; 785kg, 206.5p, £1621 and 655kg, 234.5p, £1535 for Limousin crosses bought by Owain Llyr, Charles Kirkpatrick and Jewitt Meats.  Mr Andrew Ewing, Dumbretton sold a Limousin cow for 797kg, 216.5p, £1725 bought by Owain Llyr.  Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold a Limousin cross cow for 786kg, 203.5p, £1599 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Norman, Little Orton run of Limousin cows topped at 712kg, 221.5p, £1577 to Jewitt Meats.  Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold the top priced Charolais cow for 906kg, 171.5p, £1553 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold the top priced Simmental cow for 785kg, 189.5p, £1487 to Les Fell.

All classes of Dairy cast cows were in great demand.  Messrs Dockray, Kelsick House sold a Holstein cross heifer for 791kg, 185.5p, £1467 to David Holmes.  Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End sold a 6-year-old Holstein cross cow for 879kg, 147.5p, £1296 to Les Fell.  Messrs Haston, Dearham Hall sold a Holstein cross heifer for 718kg, 176.5p, £1267 to Les Fell.  Mr John Rogerson & Son, Wardpark sold a 7 ½ year old Fleckvieh cow for 878kg, 141.5p, £1242 to Les Fell.  Messrs Haston & Son, Swordwellrigg sold a Montbeliarde cross heifer for 703kg, 175.5p, £1233 to Brian Capper.  Messrs Clark, Whins sold a 6-year-old Holstein cross cow for 844kg, 145.5p, £1228 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Stalker, Ratten Castle sold a Holstein cross heifer for 209.5p; Messrs Dixon, Beech House sold a Holstein cross heifer for 180.5p; Messrs Beard, Dormansteads sold the top price Friesian heifer for 177.5p and Messrs Mattinson & Sons, Rosewain sold the top priced Ayrshire heifer for 176.5p.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime sheep attracted a pleasing entry of 1600 head.

SPRING LAMBS: Monday 17th May 2021 saw a larger entry of 490 prime lambs where trade excelled all vendors expectations with trade being 40p dearer than markets selling at the end of last week; an overall average of 322ppk and an SQQ of 328ppk.  Topping today’s sale at £200 was an outstanding Beltex lamb from Messrs Skelton, Low House with pence per kilo topping for the same lamb at 444ppk.  Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall sold their weekly consignment of 9 lambs to average £161.89.  Suffolk lambs sold to £170 for a 52kg lamb from Messrs Pritchard, Evistones.

PRIME HOGGS: A smaller show of 900 hoggs were forward being a great show for the time of the year.  Well finished hoggs would be very similar on the week and selling to a top of £178 from Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill; this consignment sold to average £171.75.  Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown sold a fantastic run of hoggs with Blackies selling to a top of £150 with a pen of 30 from this good home selling to 314ppk.

CAST SHEEP: The weekly sale of 210 cast ewes and rams saw trade slightly easier on the week.  Topping today’s sale at £200 was a Texel ram from Messrs Welters, Kernal Rigg with rams continuing to fly.  Ewes topped at £144 for Texels from Messrs Brough, The Croft with Mule ewes continuing to hold demand very well regularly achieving £100 plus.
