Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night when 1,675 sheep were forward consisting of 230 spring lambs, 1,177 prime hoggs and 268 cast sheep.

Topping the spring lambs on two occasions at £170 both, for Suffolk cross lambs firstly for 54kg lambs from Messrs Skelton, Low House, Maryport which were bought by A Atkinson.

Also reaching £170 were also Suffolk cross lambs from Messrs Hutchinson, Redgate, Kirkby Stephen which were also purchased by A. Atkinson.

Topping at 382.5p/kg were a pen of 40kg Beltex cross lambs which sold for £153 from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan and were bought by M Helliwell, Rochdale, another pen of 41kg lambs from this home sold to make £156 (380.5p/kg).

A spring lambs SQQ average of 345.02p/kg was achieved which was dearer than trades seen so far on the week.

Messrs Sayer, Town End Farm, Penrith sold 51kg Texel cross hoggs to make £168 with the consignment of thirteen Texel cross lambs from this home averaging 44kg £150.02.

Suffolk cross lambs also sold to make 367.4p/kg and £158 for a pen of 43kg lambs from Terrys Farm bought by M. Helliwell.

Prime hoggs topped at £176 for a Beltex cross from Messrs Buckle, Buckles Farm, Kirkby Stephen bought by A Atkinson.

Beltex cross hoggs also sold to 322.9p/kg for 48kg hoggs making £155 from Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm, Penrith.

Hill Cheviot hoggs also sold to 311.5p/kg for a pen of eight 52kg hoggs selling for £162 also from Sunny Gill Farm, with another pen of eight 57kg cheviot hoggs making £168 also from this home.

Messrs Smithson, Bloan Farm, Brough sold a pen of fifteen 55kg hill cheviot hogg from this home averaging £157.14.

Scotch blackface hoggs sold to 295.4p/kg for a pen of forty 44kg hoggs which sold for £130 from Boghall, Fife.

Good meated hoggs of any weight and breed were in demand and were a much stronger trade then the end of the previous and beginning of this week!

Cast sheep topped at £170 for a Texel cross ewes from Messrs Lyle, Staingills, Penrith which was bought by Yorkshire Halal.
