KEPCULLOCH TAKE TOP HONOURS WITH MEG

One of the best displays of freshly calved cows and heifers Borderway has staged for some time took place in front of an enthusiastic ring of buyers.  Consignors must be congratulated on the quality on offer, and this was appreciated by the buyers with trade topping at 4,000gns with the overall average coming to £2211; 59 animals sold for or more than £2000 to 36 buyers from 12 different UK counties.  

Dugdale Nutrition sponsored the show and Willie Brewster from Wester Borland Farm Stirling judged the classes.  This was the first live show since the start of lockdown.  The Overall Champion went to Kepculloch Lambda Meg consigned by Robert Steel, she was beautiful heifer with style and a big-time udder.  She was bred from a VG86 Atwood that was previously sold through the Border & Lakeland sale in 2019.  Meg topped the sale at 4,000gns going to Ali Cook from the Hurkeldale herd near Annan.

The Reserve Champion went to Boclair Doc Reizend consigned the Brewster family from near Glasgow.  She was sired by Kind Doc and bred from eight generations of Excellent or Very Good cows.  This family originated from France with the sixth dam by Broker featuring at the Royal Show.  The dairy heifer sold for 3,200gns to Mr Sloan from Ayrshire.

The Boclair herd sold five other heifers to average almost £2800 including Boclair Chief Hope who sold for 2,900gns to Mr Caldwell from Ayrshire.  She was giving 42kgs and will be the sixth generation of animals to classify in the top grades.

Selling for 3,100gns was Berryholme Apple Crisp Flo from David & Francis Wright from Kendal.  Sired by Apple Crisp her grand dam was the Excellent 94 Posh Flo who was full siter to the 2010 National Champion Berryholme Shottle Flo.  The super uddered young cow was purchased by Baltier Farming near Newton Stewart.

Kepculloch Attico August Red sold for 3,000gns to Mr Rae from near Dumfries.  She was sired by Attico Red and was from the DRA August cow family with Sellcrest No Rachel Red being her sixth dam. 

Absolute Genetics sold Absolute Callen Pic N Mix for 2,900gns to Baltier Farming.  She was sired by Callen and bred from thirteen generations of Excellent or Very goods from the La Presentation Daurel cow family in Quebec. 

Newhouse Farms sold 16 in-calf heifers due in August and September and topped at 1,700gns on several occasions to average £1561.  The first to sell for 1,700gns was a sired by Stouder Morty from a Saloon dam with over 13000kgs. 

An exceptional British Friesian yearling heifer from the Ava Malt’s Gemini herd in Norfolk sold for 1,800gns to Paul Smith from N. Ireland.  She was sired by Deangate Quaich, her dam was Junior Champion at UK Dairy Expo in 2017 and was sired by Slyhigh Patrol. 

An outstanding group of heifer calves from the Liscabank Holstein herd topped at 750gns on three occasions to average £664.  This was a well grown group of January and February born heifers sired by attractive sires and from proven cow families. 

The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on the 2nd June and features 320 dairy cattle in Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale.  This sale features 150 in calf heifers and the dispersal of the youngstock for Mr Hummel.  Catalogues for this sale can be viewed online at www.harrisonandhetherington.co.uk or can be order from the Pedigree Office 01228 406230
