Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 24th May Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock. A good show of 398 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and 1315 prime sheep.

PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 81 prime bulls forward at Borderway’s weekly sale with trade very similar to that of last week but still less than a fortnight ago.  Topping the trade at £1786.26 was a Limousin from Messrs Connell, Wanton Walls, Launder, this was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers.  The next two best were also purchased by Messrs Pearson at £1763.90 from Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton and £1745.37 from Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth.  Simmentals to £1516.59 sold by Messrs Burgess, High Keenley Fell, Hexham and was purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale.  Top price per kilo of 237.50 was attained by Messrs Cleasby, Linden House for one of their run of Limousin bulls purchased by Ralph Pearsons.

Dairy bulls were very easily sold throughout the sale with the best levelling out at £1212.17 for a Friesian from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie purchased by Capper Farming, Glasgow.  Fleckviehs sold to £1167.06 from Seymour Farms, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Top pence per kilo of 185.00 was attained three times, firstly for Friesians from Messrs Reed, Croft House, Carlisle, secondly by Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Carlisle purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Thirdly by Messrs Trafford, Springfield Farm, Cockermouth purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another quality and large show of 61 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway weekly sale.  An ease on the trade was evident throughout the sale although no less than expectations.  Top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from weekly vendors Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle attaining £1827.48.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold another to £1789.43 and Messrs Cape, Kirkland Guards, Wigton to £1776.94 all of the above purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  British Blues to £1693.27 from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 247.5p was paid to Messrs Bowe, Bothel with one of their aforementioned Limousin crosses.  Heifers seen a day’s top of £1702 for a superb Charolais cross from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont, this heifer totalled up to £1702.89 and was purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.  Limousin crosses to £1606.48 from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and £1601.15 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  British Blue crosses to £1535.52 from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle and purchased by W E Fairlie, Letham.  The top overall pence per kilo of 249.5p was paid to Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton with their Limousin cross and this was purchased by Black Brow Abattoir, Wigton.  Messrs Illingworth, Howgillside, Lockerbie sold another to 248.5p and was purchased by W E Fairlie.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A good show of 250 Cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to a keen ring side of buyers. Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains sold the top priced British Blue cow weighing 930kg, 169.5p £1576 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Smith & Shepherd, Glebelands run of Limousin x cows topped at 730 kg, 205.5p £1500 and 673 kg 214.5p £1443 both purchased by Owain Llyr.  Messrs Cowx & Son, Hudscale sold a Limousin cow for 830kg 177.5p £1473 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Rome & Co, Niven Hill sold an outstanding Limousin cow for 656 kg 219.5p £1439 both purchased by Michael Helliwell.  Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House sold a Maine Anjou cow for 905 kg, 153.5p £1389 and a Simmental cow from the same home for 821 kg 164.5p £1350 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Les Fell and a 35-month-old Simmental Heifer for 608kg 206.5p £1255 to Sean McGimpsey.  Mr Andrew Ewing, Dunbretton Farm sold Limousin cows for 617kg 216.5p £1335 and 635kg 199.5 £1266 both bought by Owain Llyr.

All classes of dairy cast cows were in great demand.  Messrs Brown, Lane End Farm sold a Holstein x Heifer for 697kg 185.5 £1202 to Les Fell, Messrs Threlkeld, Ladywell sold a Holstein heifer for 697 kg 179.5p £1251 again to Les Fell.  Castlesteads Farm run of Holstein x cows topped at 700 kg 151.5p £1210 to Sean McGimpsey who also bought Messrs Hunter & Son Berrier Head Holstein x cow which sold for 844 kg 142.5p £1201.  Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm sold a Holstein Heifer for 676 kg 176.5 £1193 to Les Fell.  Messrs Murchie & Son, Hawkshole sold a Holstein cow for 789 kg 149.5 £1179 to Les Fell.  Messrs Gardhouse, Cumdivock House sold an Ayrshire heifer for 710 kg 165.5p £1175 again to Les Fell.  A Friesian Heifer from Messrs Peile, Parkgate Hall sold for 183.5p.  Burthwaite Farms sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 177.5p.  Holstein x heifers sold from Messrs Purdie, Inglestonford at 176.5p, Thackwood farms at 176.5p and Messrs Callion & Son, Lodge Farm, at 173.5p.

CAST BULLS: 7 Stock bulls were on offer today.  Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains sold a British Blue stock bull weighing 1193 kg totalling £2153 to Owain Llyr.  Mr George Brough, Old Rectory Farm sold the top price Limousin stock bull for 1186kg 153.5p £1820 again to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 24th May 2021 Harrison and Hetherington held conducted their weekly prime sheep sale, prime lamb numbers are still hard to come by with 507 forward this week, the last week of May also sees the hoggs nearing completion with 674 head forward.

SPRING LAMBS: The weather may be cold and wet but the lamb trade however is anything but with every lamb in the market levelling at £142.33 a head.  Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall brought a fantastic run of Beltex lambs forward this week to top the trade at £189 which sold to Mr R Skelton; another of this run claimed the top price per kilo at 453.8ppk (39kg, £177) to Mr M Helliwell with the consignment levelling at 42.48kg, 407.98ppk, £173.30 per head.  Mess Noble, Mill Farm, Beckermet sold lambs to £181 for 46kg Texels with Seymour Farms, Wigton hot on the leaders’ heels at £179 for 42kg.  17 pens sold over 400ppk!!!

PRIME HOGGS: A mixed bag of hoggs forward, as to be expected, meat remained a great trade with 300ppk easily achieved.  Two vendors led the way at £170 for Beltex x Texels, Messrs Mulholland, Great Orton and Messrs Hewetson, Scales Hall, Penrith.  Top pence per kilo was from Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton at 340ppk with his run averaging £161.40, closely followed by Messrs Hewetson, Penrith at £161.12 for a run of heavies.
